Hey #FediFam,Need to create a new email address for professional things, and I don't want to use "Evil, Inc.," nor non-IMAP-supporting (otherwise good) services like Proton and Tuta. (I know they have bridge software available, but still)What do you guys recommend?I'm currently using Mailbox.org for my personal email, but I find their web interface has become kind of slow and unwieldy as of late. I don't want full groupware (or some attempt at an emulation of the above), but just a solid IMAP email provider, and a usable web interface when I need to do things beyond what can be done from Thunderbird.Any #recommendations?#askFedi #HiveMind

@rl_dane My top recommendation: self host.If you can’t self host, then my second recommendation is to find a friend you trust who’ll host your email.I’m happy to offer email hosting, but I haven’t done web-based access for ages (used to use Squirrelmail).

@rl_dane @AnachronistJohn use a VPN to tunnel from a dirt cheap VPS so you can have their static IP for your mail. Immediately go check the reputation of the IP address because someone probably spammed from it in the past, but you can fix it.Then you should have a reputable IP that can be used. Otherwise you're probably screwed because residential IPs are nearly impossible to get off the lists.That's how I'm doing it right now. I have my Fastmail as a backup but I've been migrating nearly all my email usage to self-hosted. The Fastmail is my insurance plan if I get hit by a bus so my wife can keep accessing the really important stuff, do password resets, etc. A bad power outage or crash and she'd be screwed because my homelab stuff is all full disk encrypted...

@feld @rl_dane This is one of my test email servers. It gets a public, static IP over a tinc tunnel. It’s a backup MX for more than a hundred domains and the primary MX for a test domain.https://poofydoof.zia.io/I think most people would be surprised at how modest a computer is required to host email.What requires resources, really, is dealing with the half a dozen IMAP processes running simultaneously, fighting with each other, because multiple devices are configured to fetch constantly.

@feld @rl_dane If you click the link at the top of the minimal page, you can see the dmesg.It’s a MangoPi MQ-Pro MPi-MQ1PH, which is a 64 bit, single core, 1 GHz, RISC-V with a gig of memory running NetBSD. I got it in part because it’s pink :)

@feld @rl_dane I’ve run full mail servers (with SMTP AUTH, but without IMAP / IPOP3) on PogoPlugs, and they have 128 megs of memory. I’ve also run a Mac LC III+ with 36 megs, but TLS negotiation sometimes takes longer than other mail servers are willing to wait (and it can’t do more than one at a time). Memory isn’t usually an issue.

I'm thinking about other email services, but for now I'm pretty deep into Nextcloud and haven't really wanted to think about the email component of my "stack."I am using Thunderbird more and more for multiple email accounts and RSS feeds. I should give them another donation. I'd love for it to look "better," knowing full well that many will complain if anything is changed.

@rl_dane if only they stopped making changes for the sake of it, like moving menu entries around or changing button graphics. I know a few non-tech people who depend on TB (lest they also move to google webmail) and they are stalled by things like this.@passthejoe @justine @feld

Sylpheed Claws🦞!That's one of my favorite email clients of times long past. When it later got branded into Claws Mail I used it for a couple of years. I'm glad to know that it's still around.Sylpheed was coded by a Japanese programmer and Sylpheed Claws was a fork out of that, because there were certain features that the other programmer wanted. The code base was shared in a friendly fashionThe nice thing about Claws Mail is that it's very light on resources. I was in that period transitioning from elm forcing myself to use a graphic based browser on Linux, when I was in X-windowsOn the Amiga I was using Thor mail and News reader for the Gods, for more than a decade. Threading looked much nicer to me, in a graphical mail client. Of course, back then, I think it was a lot easier to use Big Tech email with a lightweight client. Today, it's almost impossible.I also have fond memories of ccMail and while I never used it myself, I know many people will smile if I just mention the name "Eudora." ;)On the other hand, I think the Earth should open up and swallow Outlook whole. 😆I didn't much like it at the time, but Lotus Notes was ok for what it was and when it was. ;)
