       Everyone in infosec said you shouldn't call strong cryptography "military-grade encryption". I propose to do the opposite: call all forms of weak cryptography "export-grade encryption". Example: "Hashing passwords in MD5? That's the export grade."

       @niconiconi @puniko@mk.absturztau.be the fact that my old MSI mainboard booted with a boot screen logo that stayed something military grade made me kinda proud at first. but now it makes me realize how weak of an argument it is. isn't rsa128 also military grade ?

       @puniko @niconiconi I just think of FIPS (US gov standards) and how enabling "FIPS mode" occasionally re-enables older algorithms that are no longer trusted in 'civilian' software but are still "approved," while disabling more modern ciphers that aren't "blessed" by the NSA for govt use.

       @becomethewaifu@tech.lgbt @niconiconi "military-grade" was used for marketing for a while back in the days and i only ever really saw it used that way during that time, which is why that phrase is related to it being just empty marketing fluff in my brain
