       I think the whole "eating lead paint chips" was always a lie and it was leaded gas which is the main culprit.I wonder if poorer kids who were in urban environments ended up having higher lead concentrations

       There was some research done on this: https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/lead-gasoline-blunted-iq-half-us-population-study-rcna19028The peer-reviewed study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, focuses on people born before 1996 — the year the U.S. banned gas containing lead.Overall, the researchers from Florida State University and Duke University found, childhood lead exposure cost America an estimated 824 million points, or 2.6 points per person on average. Certain cohorts were more affected than others. For people born in the 1960s and the 1970s, when leaded gas consumption was skyrocketing, the IQ loss was estimated to be up to 6 points and for some, more than 7 points. Exposure to it came primarily from inhaling auto exhaust.

       yeah, I was looking into that because people were claiming that the lead was the reason that lots of people in that age range are nuts. And it was too much of a just-so answer so I was digging in a bit.What I'm in particular wondering about is that "Average" - if lead exposure is that bad, I'd imagine it wasn't at all spread evenly. Kids in the country for example should have had way less exposure.

       @sickburnbro lead is just a scapegoat to paper over black underachievement and criminality after forced integration. after combustion, in the exhaust gases, the lead is minimally bioavailable

       yeah, I never bought the paint chips. I do think they found elevated blood levels of lead in kids that were even quite young which is what caused the massive freak out.And it seems like they did start putting more TEL in gas in like the 60s, because it was a cheap way to raise octane, which was needed for high compression engines.for the graph, ignore the red since it's the unsure part. the "amount of leaded gas consumed" is  from Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, so is probably quite accurate of "this is how much lead we put into gas"And perhaps with that much it doesn't take that much bioavailablity if you've soaked every alveoli in it.

       I would add that there was tons of money thrown in to abatement of lead. Always follow the money.

       sure, but that money only appeared after the laws. I think at worst this is a "dietary fat causes heart attacks" kind of misattribution. They measured people who had high blood lead levels and noted they performed worse over time.Just like the dietary fat, it might be a coinciding cause, but there is something there.
