I always block people doing the "as a European, I blame all Americans for the state of their country" schtick.Fuck off. I was born into a country under an oppressive government. I want to say to them: so you're European? Then take some time to figure out if the wealth of your particular nation comes from colonized & enslaved people elsewhere in the world. Find the corruption & exploitation in your system. Then I guess you should figure out how to fix that, since you're such a genius. Report back once you're finished.

But I presume these people are not angry about injustice but angry that they personally feel that their safety (& finances) are threatened.There doesn't seem to be any compassion in this perspective. I mean, did you miss the part earlier THIS YEAR where government agents shot a guy on the street for trying to check if someone being assaulted by the thugs was ok?They went through Minneapolis not just beating, abducting, & killing people, but also doing property damage & stealing shit along the way because the president wanted to punish the state for not being subservient enough. He wanted to make Minnesotans pay.But you would simply fix this if you were a US citizen? Uh-huh.

Trump's ICE army has been terrorizing our cities for more than a year.Government thugs abduct people off the fucking street & beat anyone who tries to do anything about it. My brother dedicated several weeks to helping feed & protect his neighbors, & I was absolutely terrified for him the whole time. It could have been him getting shot.Is it that hard to understand that we are NOT safe, & we are NOT free? (& it was already a police state before Trump got his hands on it for god's sake)

@cyno @artemis European institutions, though clearly on the same path and not far behind, are not in the same state of rot as American ones. That means that the forces working to unravel society (the far right, the ultra-rich, the colonialists, the surveillance junkies) still have to keep the propaganda machine up - as opposed to MAGA which completely stopped bothering with propaganda, leaving the corruption and fascism in full display.As a result, unfortunately, the propaganda is working on a good amount of Europeans, and I personally know a lot of people, even smart people, who just have no idea of what is happening. They don't know the importance of colonial revenue to prop up European countries. They believe that immigration is a danger. They believe that the "far left" (which is often just social democracy, which was center-left in the 80s-90s, the Overton window got hit by a train to the right) is just as dangerous and "extremist" as the far right.After all, we're not as stupid as the Americans! We would never let things get so bad in the first place! If we have problems, it's clearly that the left is antisemitic. Don't let them win elections and we'll be fine.It's really disheartening to see. Nobody here is learning the lessons of what has happened to the USA in the past 40 years. We're smugly looking down on Americans while making the exact same mistakes. I don't know how to prevent that.

@ska @Elizafox Yeah, I'm under the impression that most of the Europeans who think of themselves as living in one of the "good countries" think that in part because they personally have never put anything on the line to find out what happens to those who refuse to conform & obey. It's easy to feel free as long as you never step out of line.

@artemis @ska @Elizafox absolutely. I live in Denmark, where most people believe that they are free to protest and that the system is just. Last Wednesday twenty people sat down to blockade the headquarters of Maersk. They were immediately attacked by frenzied cops with batons and dogs. But most people will not hear about that or assume that, somehow, "they must have asked for it"

@magnus @artemis @Elizafox Protesting only works when the government is actually interested in knowing what the people want and doing some of it (if only to secure the next elections).It has become increasingly clear in the last 10 years that our governements don't anymore. They're being increasingly bought, and the propaganda machine works to keep the people from voting them out.I am afraid there is no peaceful end to this.
