To be seen. To be safe. To be yourself. 🌈 For too many, this still comes at a cost. On IDAHOT, we stand with LGBTIQ+ people across Europe, and against hate, discrimination and violence. Because we protect what matters. Our freedoms, our rights, our democracy.

@EUCommission Noooooo, not the progress pride flag! Please! The simple rainbow flag is already perfect; it’s inclusive and great-looking! We don’t need to keep adding more and more stripes; it looks ridiculously cluttered, kind of like when you start adding way too many letters to LGBT+. (There will always be some you missed, so simple catch-all symbols are necessary.) :gutkato_larmas: :flago_tasuloj:Otherwise agree with the message wholeheartedly, though. Thank you very much. :gutkato_dikfingro_supren: :gutkato_koro_tasuloj:

@tirifto @EUCommission I just call them queer, it’s a lot more accurate than typing out half the alphabet, lol. As far as the flag, I’ve been wondering why transsexuals had to create their own flag. Apparently the rainbow isn’t inclusive enough? 🤦🏻♂️

@dademurphy @EUCommission I don’t, since some (if perhaps only a small minority) find the term offensive due to its connotations. I do appreciate the function it tries to fill, though.Transgender people having their own flag is not about the rainbow flag not being inclusive enough, but about it being too inclusive. Sometimes you want a symbol that’s representative of only you, not you and a lot of other people in similar circumstances. Hence why there’s also a trans flag, a lesbian flag, an intersex flag, a non-binary flag, an asexual flag, a polyamory flag, and so on.:flago_transseksuloj: :flago_inemulinoj: :flago_interseksuloj: :flago_neduumuloj: :flago_neseksemuloj: :flago_pluramuloj:

@tirifto @EUCommission I once came across this comment regarding this:The progress flag isn’t about representation specifically - all LGBTQ+ people are represented by the rainbow already. The progress flag was designed to draw attention to where we have more work to do to ensure all of our community is making progress, unfortunately whilst as a whole community we’ve made progress it has not been equal and some parts of the community have not seen as much progress as the others. The arrows aren’t saying trans people weren’t represented by the rainbow, or that poc are LGBTQ+ automatically. It was a call to action for us as a community to recognise which parts of our community need focus to ensure they also make progress. It also reminds us of those we lost to AIDS and how we need to both continue to support people, and tackle serophobia in the community.(Although I'd personally prefer the intersex-inclusive pride flag, because the og progressive one comes with some copyright messiness)

@ohfp @EUCommission Thank you, I like the sentiment behind that! But I still feel like there must be a much better way to further said goal other than assaulting my eyes. :gutkato_ridas_nervume:(The commission has posted some variation on the intersex-inclusive flag; I only called it the progress flag because I couldn’t remember the exact ‘official’ name and because it’s basically the progress flag but with even more visual clutter. Which makes me wonder if the potential copyright messiness might extend to that, too.)

@EUCommission Systemically deported queer people to countries that will harm them have other things to say. As do the relations of queer people who committed suicide because of your inhumane immigration policies. Most queer people globally are non white, a huge proportion of queer people in Europe are non white. And yet most images talking about them are of white people. This is pinkwashing, focus on the biggest issues facing the queer community (including your inhumane immigration policy) and come back to me.

@EUCommission Here, less writing things in "excellence-based" language. L1: why the full stops?L2: "these." "this" conjures up thoughts of "the message" being the thing.L3: WTF is IDAHOT?L3: Never begin a sentence with "But," "Because" or "And"Also, fucking just write messages that we can get behind instead of sloganeering.

I totally missed that ^^re: copyright:According to https://publicservicepride.ca/resources/flag/, the intersex-inclusive one should be fine to useUse of the Intersex-Inclusive Pride flag is permitted. However, Valentino Vecchietti, the creator of the Intersex-Inclusive Pride flag, asks to be credited/acknowledged in association with its use.unlike the other one (https://northantslesbiansociety.co.uk/2023/02/28/why-we-will-not-use-the-progress-pride-flag/), at least ^

@EUCommission IMO you are hypocritical and abusing LGBTIQ+🌈 people by indiscriminate witch-hunt style crackdown on freedom of expression and intrusion into private intimate lives with excuse of fight against CP which has negative impact on dating of LGBTIQ+🌈 people and worsens their loneliness:1)People 15-18 will go to jail if they use their own naked pics for the legitimate purpose of online dating2)If someone online dates a 19yo and the 19yo sends older naked pic from when they were 17y11m old, they may not notice it, both go to jail. Also closeup pic-can't guess age.3)At least Czech EU regime punishes when they are over 18 but"appear"17, with no definition of"appear".The state violates social contract, doesn't publish a clear legal norm, opens an avenue for corrupt judges to arbitrarily send people to jail by saying the magic phrase"it appears to me to be 17". Abusable to suppress dissent. Some 30+yo Asians appear 17.IMO it's racism, lookism and discrimination.#lgbt #eu #racism

@dademurphy @tirifto @EUCommission the term "transsexual" is outdated, incorrect, and was replaced. The correct term is transgender. Reason behind this change was: the suffix "sexual" refers to sexual orientation (who someone would feel sexual attraction to). Trans people are trans in regards to the gender they were assigned, not in regards to the sexuality they were assigned. [1/2]

@ofm @tirifto @EUCommission if gender is a social construct and if they wish to be addressed as the sex they are emulating, then the name should match.

@dademurphy @ofm @EUCommission Gender (in its current definition) being a social construct doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant, it just means it depends on social factors rather than biology. You address them as their gender (and not whatever sex they were born with) precisely because it’s the gender that matters for addressing someone in society. :gutkato_renversa:

@dademurphy @tirifto @EUCommission The rainbow flag is an umbrella for all queers. But your comment/knowledge gap shows why including the groups that are marginalized within the community in the currently used flag is very important. Otherwise we wouldn't have had the learning opportunity we just had. [2/2]

@tirifto @EUCommission but doesn’t that seem counterintuitive at the very least? If you preach inclusivity, the last thing I would expect you to do is exclude every other queer ideology because you want your own flag. If the rainbow is an umbrella term, you should be content with that, creating your own flag, to me, is sending the complete opposite message you are trying to convey.

@dademurphy @EUCommission It doesn’t seem counter-intuitive in the slightest. Trans people, gay people, intersex people, asexual people, polyamorous people etc. are all different and entirely separate. Sometimes it makes sense to talk about all groups at once, since they do have things in common, but other times it’s better to talk about each of them separately. Not everything that concerns trans people, for example, will be relevant to the other groups, although a lot of it will. Therefore, it makes a lot of sense to have both individual symbols and common symbols. If you want a (very) loose comparison, just because we have the EU doesn’t mean that individual states no longer matter, or just because the Fediverse software is largely interoperable doesn’t mean Mastodon, Misskey and Pleroma aren’t all separate projects. Umbrella terms are nice for grouping similar things together, but it makes no sense to ‘be content with that’ when grouping similar things together is not always what you can, want, or should do.In short, having individual symbols does not imply rejecting shared identity, and having shared symbols does not imply rejecting individual identity. :gutkato_flucerba:

@EUCommission dat you?The EU stopped short of heeding a call by over a million people, who signed a petition last May calling on the 27-country bloc to prohibit such methods. (…) This is a "missed opportunity," said the group Against Conversion Therapy, which launched the petition. "In an international political context where the rise of reactionary ideas is affecting the entire world, it is urgent the European Union acts," it said.EU will not ban LGBTQ+ 'conversion therapy' but will push states to do so

@ombremad We considered several options, and, although a Recommendation is a non-binding legal act, it is the best and most effective instrument to achieve the objective of the ECI. That’s because banning conversion practices by means of criminal law is a competence of EU countries. Some countries have already done so. We are committed to supporting EU countries who are in the process of banning conversion practices and encourage others who wish to start the process. https://link.europa.eu/PmbyM4

@ombremad They may not be legally binding, but are used by courts to interpret laws, and inspire national policies. One such example is the 2021 European Child Guarantee. The aim to protect children from social exclusion due to poverty was set out in the Recommendation, EU countries themselves chose to implement policies to achieve this. Examples: providing school meals or mandating that school trips must be accessible to children. https://employment-social-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies-and-activities/eu-employment-policies/long-term-unemployment_en

@tirifto @EUCommission @dademurphy but it does make it very complicated though. I quit remembering the letters when half of the alphabet was added. Same with the flag.Because if you want it ALLl inclusive... What's the hetero flag? The single (wo)men flag? The young, retired, working, (following political groups).. and so on.The more separation in symbols, the more separation in people, instead of inclusion, imo.
