       This goes even harder if you know that the Dragonlance Chronicles were based on a home D&D campaign. Weis and Hickman were just that good at writing fantasy that they were able to take stock characters and make them feel unique and fleshed-out

       That makes sense.  I never got into Dragonlance.  My favorite fantasy was always work by Glen Cook, Michael Moorcock, Karl Edward Wagner, and obviously Tolkien.

       Margaret Weis was a huge Tolkien fangirl and it shows in her workGlen Cook and Jack Vance (The Dying Earth) showed me what good fantasy really looked like

       Glen Cook is my favorite.  His Black Company Books of the North trilogy is pure gold.

       It certainly has that element.  The biggest draw for me in the original trilogy was the interplay between Goblin and One Eye, and of course the dread duo Limper and Soulcatcher.

       All of the Ten Who Were Taken are absolute badasses, whether just seen for a single scene (Bonegnasher effortlessly disabling the forvalaka), guest appearances (Stormbringer), uneasy 'allies' (The Howler) or a seemingly unkillable big bad (Limper)

       Did you ever read The Blade Itself /the First Law series by Abercrombie? They're the last fantasy recommendation/loan i got about 12 years back. Enjoyable grimdark.

       @Ash_Kvetchum recommended Abercrombie a while back. I read the first trilogy and really enjoyed it. About to start the next series.
