The "smarter" all the devices get, the smarter I feel for not buying them.

@alice I work in computer security and do a lot of work on automotive stuff.People ask me what I think of self-driving cars.I tell them I get to work on a bicycle. The smartest thing on it is the USB charge controller for my headlight and if it makes a funny noise or starts smoking I can yank it off the handlebars and yeet it somewhere far away from me.

@alice If I am ever forced to buy a 2015+ vehicle (or whenever they started putting telematics on cars) due to lack of alternatives, you can bet I am going to go bumper to bumper with a spectrum analyzer and nearfield probe set and neutralize every radio transmitter on the car by any means necessary.Removing the entire ECU? Cutting traces to the antenna and replacing them with a 50-ohm terminator? High voltage into the antenna until it stops responding? One way or another, it won't phone home. But the longer it takes and the more work it requires, the more pissed I'll be.

@alice I am absolutely prepared to excise radio power amplifiers with a hot air rework station if it comes down to that level though.

@azonenberg @alice I've got a sturdy 20+ year old sedan, and I'm realizing I should just plan to keep it running forever as long as the frame is intact.Theres decades of compatible parts lying around in warehouses and junkyards, and I don't care if I have to swap an engine that isn't "compatible" and custom mount it. That sounds better than a new surveillance-mobile.

@unlofl @alice I'm hoping one day a bunch of angry nerds will design either an entire suite of new electronics/controls for a popular late model vehicle, or better yet an entirely new vehicle, that is simple, low tech, repairable, and open source to the extent practical.Rip out the CAN bus controlled door locks and replace them with ones that use physical keys that don't need batteries.Remove the touchscreen HVAC controls and put in physical knobs. No fly-by-wire anywhere except where required to perform a key safety function like ABS. If you have to put software between human control inputs and steering/braking/acceleration, it should be as minimal as possible, formally verified, and multiply redundant processors, sensors, and actuators.Publish full mechanical drawings of common wear components to make third party replacements easier and allow the vehicles to outlive the manufacturers if they later go out of business. No ADAS features whatsoever.

@azonenberg@ioc.exchange @alice@lgbtqia.space You can, but that is likely illegal. In Germany even twice illegal:- Operating a bicycle without a light- LitteringObviously, if the Li-Ion battery started smoking, that'd count as a justified emergency. Although it can be quite tricky to figure out where thou lobbest thy holy hand grenade of Li-Ion, if no qualified foe is nearby.

@divVerent @alice Yeah I'm talking about a malfunction that makes it unsafe to keep around.(I also have redundant headlights so if the battery on one of them runs dry or fails in a non-catastrophic manner I will still be able to see)

@azonenberg @unlofl @alice there's a Canadian company building computer-free tractors. Apparently they're selling them as fast as they can build them.https://tractorevolution.com/tractor-news/ursa-ag-introduces-low-cost-mechanical-tractors-with-12-valve-cummins-engines-and-minimal-electronics/

@dragonfrog @unlofl @alice Where can I get something like this in the form factor of a 1980s ford ranger? (i.e. a truck for people who want to get things done, not a massive tank).I'm fine with electronic fuel injection, it actually improves fuel economy by a decent margin, but I would want it to be as open and repairable as possible so if something fails I can just buy a new board from a third party dealer or if i'm more technically inclined grab a new MOSFET off digikey and solder it in place of the blown one or something.

@azonenberg @unlofl @alice The advent of EVs has allowed a lot of smaller startups to appear. A lot will likely fail (making cars is ludicrously hard), but some have really interesting ideas. For instance, Aptera is making a car with solar panels on its dorsal surfaces. They specifically aren’t building their own adaptive cruise control and lane holding. Instead, they’re planning to include hooks for OpenPilot. They also discuss their right-to-repair stance in their FAQ. We’ll see if the shipping product is loaded with “connected car” junk, but their attitude so far is promising.

@bob_zim @unlofl @alice but even if they don't have the software installed it's still got actuators and sensors for software to override steering etc which is an absolute no-go for me from a safety/reliability standpoint. I don't want the capability to exist.

@azonenberg @unlofl @alice Aptera uses the throttle-by-wire for longitudinal control. Every post-2003 car I’ve personally driven has no mechanical linkage between the accelerator and the throttle. EVs don’t even *have* a throttle to have a mechanical linkage to, so the accelerator is just a software signal. Aptera also allows software engagement of the brakes, which I’m mostly okay with (collision avoidance systems are pretty great).Similarly, they use the electric power steering for lateral control. Every post-2010 car I’ve personally driven has that. No more power steering fluid, just station-keeping motors helping you move the rack.

@azonenberg @unlofl @alice OVMS exists and does all the telematics I want. Also did the same at the connector level for the antennae on my cars. Thankfully mk7 golf uses the ABS sensors instead of radio TPMS.

In the meantime, I do like you do: Own a bicycle.Besides what you wrote, I also want my vehicle to not get into the way of sustainability. Have not yet seen a car that does that, i.e., can be driven by every adult on earth without totally depleting earth's resources. So I moved to a place with decent public transpo and half-decent bike lanes and never owned a car in my life.@azonenberg @unlofl @alice

@dj3ei @unlofl @alice I'm a volunteer first responder, not having a vehicle isn't really an option. Most of the locations we go to are in rural areas with little to no transit service at the best of times, and at 1AM none at all. And obviously waiting for a bus in an emergency isn't really a great option even if service is available. So i want a functional, non enshittified option.

@azonenberg @unlofl @alice I'd like to see an EV platform with minimal or no software in the drivetrain. The main use case is solvable in the analog domain. Sure, have software for monitoring and auxiliary systems if you like, but keep it out of the running gear.

@phil_stevens @unlofl @alice That would be ideal. Personally, I think that part of the flow would be best handled in a small FPGA. I'm a big fan of RTL for critical systems because it's so much easier to compartmentalize failure domains.

@phil_stevens @unlofl @alice A PHEV would be best for me personally, I think: zero emissions if used primarily for infrequent short range local travel with overnight charging, but the ability to switch to gas and rapidly refuel if you need to make a sudden long drive, as well as to refill with canned gas if you're in a remote area for a prolonged period of time with no charging infrastructure available.
