       @ekaitz_zarraga I still support Software Heritage in its mission to archive source code—I think it’s key to free software and to reproducible builds.I’m well aware that they enabled Hugging Face’s LLM training (as well as other non-LLM-related experiments).  I’m not a fan of that and of other attempts to follow the AI trend, but that doesn’t make Software Heritage an AI shop at this point.@josch

       @ekaitz_zarraga @civodul I agree that its definitely a shame that SoftwareHeritage gave all this data for AI training. But at the same time, such is the reality of free software, that we cannot stop others from doing what they want. The same goes if Guix ever gets used in war or police (or is it already used?)Personally, I don’t think its a theater to look like we care, because I actually do. I think its so important that we show that there are still people who care, where others are just giving away code to AI, or turning to vibe coding etc…[continued…]

       @ekaitz_zarraga @civodul To me Guix has always been about caring, is that not why we do full source bootstrap? Is that not why we bother so much with our rust packages, when we could just enable internet access and let cargo do the work like others do?For me, showing that we care, its not just an image. Its my reality of Guix and why I contribute to it, and I hope it can be the same for you as well.

       @ekaitz_zarraga “We” (Guix) enabled nothing: Software Heritage scraps GitHub, PyPI, and pretty much every hosting site you could think of.But I think that’s beside the point: we work with other orgs (SWH, Codeberg e.V., R-B, etc.)  Guix and these orgs share values without being necessarily 100% aligned.And that’s OK: let’s focus on what we have in common and work together in these areas.“Pressuring” other orgs to act like we do is a dead end; it’s detrimental.
