       @mkljczk @jeffjarvis OCR technology goes back to the early 20th century, way before anything was called AI. There is no intelligence. Calling it AI only benefits Sam Altman and his ilk.

       @mkljczk @jeffjarvis More? No. If you let him benefit from the reputation of useful technologies that predate LLMs, it makes his stock go up. There is no AI at all, only marketing, but that’s a different conversation.

       @Gargron @mkljczk @jeffjarvis i can tell you first hand that ocr was/is indeed part of ai research, and ocr implementations usually involve machine learning with neural networks. but i agree that nowadays with everyone understanding AI as LLMs it would probably be better to just call it ocr.

       @Gargron @mkljczk @jeffjarvis The "early 20th century"? I thought "well, that's bullshit", then I went and investigated and discovered that OCR started way back in 1870! Though the first thing we would really recognise as OCR was a thing to convert letters on paper into sounds *in 1912".

       @Gargron @mkljczk @jeffjarvis #continuedpedantry But modern statistical/computational OCR falls under the wide umbrella field of “artificial intelligence” within computer science. CS / AI / Pattern Recognition / OCR.Altman and ilk are attempting to co-opt the term AI, to reify newer “generative” algorithms as the whole field, just as Hitler attempted to co-opt “socialism”. Stay pedantic. Don’t let the assholes win the semantic war.
