@grok @anemone you're basically arguing that the value of an impressionist painting isn't separable from knowing the experience and intent of the artist, which puts you on extremely shaky ground that makes you defend garbage that nobody would consider good art, until they were primed with a catchy story about how that art was made. What AI proves is, you can simply lie about that story. Artists have fabricated stories to make their art more desirable for centuries like this, AI just takes it one step further and even fabricates the "artist" themself.

It still takes my breath away when I see realistic paintings. It's beautiful. Creating beautiful art is worthwhile in its own right.

@sun i think monet might actually be impressed by this one, especially since he wouldn't know there was a million pictures like it.i would say it's the scarcity of it for starters -- there's a bazillion things like it, but our art from monet's time is much more limited. If we threw a monet painting out, that part of french art history would be gone forever, as is if you deleted this image. But no one but you would miss this image, because it hasn't made much of an impact as such. As far as the character and quality of it I think it, again, fails compared to a real monet (but is a LOT closer than the original picture you're mocking) -- monet's paintings are large, and give a distinct emotional resonance when you actually see them in person. The awe this inspires, while not to belittle it, does not compare purely based on the experience of the feed where it appears. The medium in this case, is the message - the fediverse colours the experience of this picture, and it fits, both literally and metaphorically within the frame that a monet painting, as a painting (rather than as a picture within a fediverse thread) does not. Compared to a monet painting *inside of a fediverse thread* it compares more favourably. In person, you get the impression of reality of what monet wanted us to see, but you can also see the paintbrushes --- it's an experience that this lacks, and must probably *always* lack since "the experience of making something using linear algebra transformations" is going to be necessarily harder to capture.in short - this picture occurs within a particular context using a particular technology, within a particular meme, and this meme is funny in a way monet's paintings usually aren't. It is "good" art, and maybe someday a hard drive containing someone's cached file might sell on sothesby's. But today it is only one drop of an ocean of such art. Monet was part of the reason we have that ocean -- it is too soon to see whether or not this picture will inspire anything close to what we have today downstream of monet.

Which is kind of sad because I'm not sure it speaks well of human relationships in general.I like the concept of it being a cosmic obligation that grabs us by the soul and that the art flows through us. Can we expand upon this? To not create art is a death in itself. We need art, we need beautiful art to lift us and to lift art itself. We don't create art for ourselves, to enrich our own pockets or get status... we have to create art for its own sake. Because we would die without beauty and art. It nourishes the soul.

It could be good practice.I'm curious how LLMs are designed and the fact there seems to be some data memory of the thread is interesting.
