I took a recent inventory of my network and am seeing an increasingly bimodal distribution of link bandwidths. Not counting trunks between switches, I currently have:* 37 active 10/100/1000 baseT links (this is also bimodal... some of the cheap Siglent gear is 10/half, almost everything else 1000baseT, there is almost no 100baseTX)* Only 4 active 10GbaseSR links, one of which is being transitioned to 40G next week* Five active 40Gbase-SR4/SR2-BIDI links, soon to be six. Most of these are eventually going to migrate to 100G too* Two 100Gbase-SR4 linksOnce I put the XL710 in SKIPJACK, the microscope bench workstation, there will only be three 10G links left. These are going to the trigger crossbar (which really only needs 1G but I put a 10G SFP+ cage on it because the FPGA transceivers could go that fast so why not), my work laptop via a Thunderbolt dongle, and the mac mini via a media converter to the single 10GbaseT link in the lab (apple start putting sfp cages in these things c'mon). It's an interesting "bandwidth desert" space where I've got a lot of hosts on the really low speed side that need connectivity but don't move a lot of data (mostly SCPI interfaces on test equipment but also things like security cameras, wifi APs, etc) and a bunch of really fast stuff, and not much in the middle. Is this a common scenario for other folks' networks?

@azonenberg Mine's a little more evenly spread* No 10 Mb/s* few 100baseT full duplex (cameras, DMM, power supply, old VSA, old scope)* 1000baseT (newer scope, FPGA boards, etc)* 2.5GbaseT (Wifi APs, always on server laptop, ONT)* 10 Gbase-CR/SR (desktop, server, FPGAs)* 25 Gbase-CR (destkop to server point to point link)* No active 100G. NICs in drawer for now due to how hot they run.

@azonenberg Not sure many people have 40-100G links in their home network 😅, doesn't sound too common tbh.For me it's storage and backup traffic between notebook/workstations/fileserver, either hosts have that (can make use of 10G+) or they don't. 10G in core + router means practically no bottlenecks ever for all 1G clients, routed or not.

@dlharmon The Siglent SPD3303X-E power supplies and SDL1020X-E load are 10/half.I probably have some 100M floating around, maybe the R&S power supplies and multimeters but I don't have the switch admin console open off the top of my head. Maybe the MultiLane BERT or some of the cameras? The LeCroy scopes are gig, as are the wifi APs. Can't remember if the Siglent vector signal generator is 100 or gig. All of the pi's I use as thin clients are gig.The thunderbolt dongle on my work laptop, the trigger crossbar., and the media converter to the mac mini are 10G.All of my servers and workstations are 40/100 now (all 100G capable but many linked at 40 due to lack of 100G optics and switch ports) except for one that currently has a 10G card and is probably getting swapped for a 40 next week.

@moreentropy I was more asking about industry lab/corporate networks than home setups. My setup is a lot closer to what you would find in a decently well funded industry lab than the average garage.

@choofa but yes i have a nexus 3064x that is mostly empty now that I've moved most of its devices out to 40/100G.Its lighting up a bunch of dark fiber to lab benches and bedrooms but most isn't actually linked at this moment
