       @salt not that Japan doesn't produce a lot of garbage as well but it also is still capable of producing ambitious peam whereas in the west the only good art is made by some guy with $20

       @salt I feel like it was more a western cope about our collective death of whimsy. In almost every case I've seen the two things were functionally identical, but the "thing japan" seemed to consistently have a more fun (not inherently more useful, just more fun) design. Just because two things are the same it doesn't mean one doesn't feel better

       @nyx @salt yea but even the vending machines over there are doing more than the vending machines in the west. you can get a whole ass breakfast out of any vending machine on the street. good luck finding a vending machine in the US that would even drop you a box of poptarts. so even their cynical trash produce is better.

       @Erato_Heti @salt Japan was just genuinely better at capitalism than the US and this is why in the 80s it was basically synonymous with cyberpunk, because everyone thought that the future was going to be dominated by Japanese industry. but it ended up getting fucked over by the contradictions in capitalism (Lost Decade(s) economic crash) when it should have become communist like China and accelerated the arrival Neo-Asia from the future

       @salt Also just in general, part of a larger psy-op to slander Japan-enthusiasts. If you like Japanese nature, you're a "thing, Japan" type guy. If you like anime, you must be a gooner into underage anime girls. If you like Japanese music, you're exclusively into Jpop for orientalism and none of the other great Japanese music genres exist. If you enjoy Katanas, you're some bullshido guy who thinks they're the ultimate weapon. If you like Japanese martial arts you're a Tennoheika Bozo that wants to repeat Nanjing. Like Japan has a lot about it I dislike, ask me, a mixed Vietnamese cannabis smoker who absolutely despises social hierarchy/Confucianism lol. But I am still a Japan enthusiast at heart.Also imo the Ryukyu Islands are just better than mainland Japan. The Ryukyus, from Amami to Yaeyama, deserve autonomy and their various languages to be revived.
