       Question! A large project posts a new chapter of the Code of Conduct, specifically related to a, let's say, Concept A. The new CoC explores ways in which Concept A can and cannot be incorporated into the project and its community. The project explicitly bans discussion of the social, economic, political, environmental and even legal aspects of the Concept A, which are all widely known, at the very least, as "not everyone agrees about it". At the same time, CoC states that Concept A is not, and should not be, unwelcome in the community, as long as it is not applied to the core part of the project. The project's leadership insists that their new policy is neutral, neither pro- nor anti- Concept A.

       I think this take is mostly "centrist" in a way that other takes like "gay people should have _some_ rights but not the same rights" are "centrist". Not making anyone happy, and shifting the Overton window, for better or worse.

       @nina_kali_nina I still feel the cards are stacked so heavily in their own favor that it’s leaning to the side, not being centrist. but maybe i’m wrong

       @domi Oh, I'm not saying that the take is neutral, I'm saying that it's not uncommon for "centrists" to be anti-environmental, anti-social progress and so on

       @nina_kali_ninaIMO it's neither pro no against, because it doesn't represent a single coherent attitude towards A. It looks like a compromise, a result of bargaining, reflecting the current balance of power between some involved parties.As a sort of centrist myself, I'd say it is a centrist-without-quotes take if not for "you're not allowed to discuss this policy" part.1/

       @nina_kali_ninaIf I were to say "let's allow some things but not other" that'd be because I'm uncertain if the other things are safe. But in that case, I would want to get more information in the future, and you can't do that if you ban discussion.In general I feel like banning discussion is a very anti-centrist thing.Here, by banning discussin, it seems they don't want to reveal the coercive pressures that make them unable to implement what the community wants.
