       @byte I think the point of having a declared takeoff time is to be able to legally deny boarding to those who show up at the gate less than 20-30 minutes in advance, just in case the plane is going to take off in time (i.e. in order to ensure that if the plane is delayed, it's for airline operational reasons, and that the plane is never delayed by passengers being late to the gate)?And it shouldn't matter to the passengers if the plane takes off late; what should matter to them is that it doesn't arrive at the destination late. But because of EU passenger rights, airlines tend to pack enough slack in their published schedules in order to ensure the plane rarely arrives late and often arrives early, even if it departs from the origin late.
