from now on any time i ever hear anyone incorrectly use the term "CalArts style" derogatorily, after telling them "you are objectively wrong and parroting misinformation, fuck off", i am going to send them here to see what CalArts students actually makehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpeepFGk-ZE

if you don't like cartoon network steven universe bean mouth then fine, you can dislike cartoon network steven universe bean mouth, and we can have an interesting discussion about the system of incentives that drives that (including topics like vendor and skill lockin with the corporate software tools that you may not have known are common to pretty much all the "bean mouth" cartoons, as well as the tendency by necessity of creatives entering the workforce to comply with the safe stylistic choices of whatever they're already doing, etc)but that is not CalArts, and there is no CalArts style to speak of. if there is a style that deserves that name it might be the style you find in movies like The Iron Giant, but i think that argument is outdated at this point

@linear The term always bugged me, too -- speaking as someone who had attended the summer school at CalArts. I know that CSSSA/Innerspark is separate from CalArts, but still, I was always sensitive to people using the term in that negative way.

@linear I never thought about their mouth shape and I'm fascinated to hear that software has that much influence on animation style! if you would like to infodump about that system of incentives, I would probably be interested in reading about it

@jamey@toot.cat i do not have the energy to spend on a long infodump.i do want to say that, i don't intend to suggest that ToonBoom is in any way "the cause" of this but rather, as tends to happen with tools, the things that an artist or team will make with it - especially under pressure of time - are influenced by what is easily and quickly done with them. especially when working somewhere that already has workflows around the softwarea few years prior to the "bean mouth" style becoming popular, Flash was still a common animation tool for professional cartoons, and, similarly, many of those cartoons shared stylistic characteristics, that often came down to the software making that particular thing easier than other options.in both cases, it is often not actually the art style that gives it away, but details around either motion or compositing (which are significantly automated by the software) which can make it hard to correct for. this is sometimes very visible in long-running shows that switch animation software between seasons.IMO it's an impressive feat for a computer-animated show to be able to successfully mask what software or software version it is using, or a transition between them. or even just eventually "recover" the style a while later after getting used to it
