       @freya @hipsterelectron Well… L4Linux has been a thing, there's User-Mode-Linux, and basically every somewhat big OS has some sort of linux compatibility layer. (Windows, macOS for docker stuff, FreeBSD, various illumos systems, 9Front, …)

       @freya @hipsterelectron Isn't there one of the WSL version which doesn't actually launches the kernel? (You have the userland of course, like how the emulation layers on FOSS systems are syscalls + filesystem APIs)

       @pinskia @navi @hipsterelectron @valorzard @freya For POSIX yeah, threads are still into an option group, in fact `posix_spawn` family of interfaces also has it's own.That said PSE52 (profile of POSIX) allows to skip multiple processes (but requires threads ^^): https://posix.opengroup.org/docs/pse52-2003.html

       @freya @hipsterelectron @dalias Maybe if they made /bin/sh a posix shell it would be worth considering 😝No, the landscape is bad, unfortunately. Not uniformly, and not for the same reason everywhere, but it's all bad, especially if we're starting to hit the weaknesses of Linux these days.

       @freya @hipsterelectron @dalias Oh.Well the /bin/sh of Solaris (11 and 10 and the previous versions as well all back to SunOS 4 at least) does not run my configure script (which is written in pure posix shell). It has never been posix-compliant. If you want something on Solaris that looks like a posix shell if you squint hard enough, you need /usr/xpg4/bin/sh.And that's the most obvious annoyance that I have with Solaris, but it's far from the last.(I'm not a Solaris hater. I have gripes against all Unix-like OSes. Because I try to port my software to all of them and they're all painful for different reasons, and the most compliant with the specs is GNU by a mile and a half, and I hate that fact as well.)
