@toiletpaper@shitposter.world Nice article. Should maybe add that their analysis does not even cover Christianity in general, but only the interests of MAGAism. As an example, many, I would even say most, Christians do support some abortions, and typically the role of the executing "surgeon" and the role of the diagnosing doctor are separate, which means that the question of a religious objection to the practice does not raise itself.Furthermore, some other protections they demand, such as that wedding cake story, are dumb as well. No bakery is forced to make specific cakes. If you do not want to be "forced" to make a custom cake you do not like to make, that is your right as the "artist". Just do not offer it as a public service then. Otherwise this is akin to an artist offering "I will draw anything for $50", and then refusing to draw a black person. You said you would draw anything, so that is the standard you will be held to.And a about "happy holidays" - no one stopped anyone from saying "merry Christmas". Heck, you can even say "merry Christmas, Hanukkah and Festivus". It is not wrong to just say the one matching your faith, and I as a Christian would not be offended by any of the others. I would think "I celebrate the other one, but fine, thanks".They do not want to force Christianism on the US. They want to force a variant of it that disregards stuff like "love thy neighbor", and imposes restrictions on everyone else. But indeed, religious freedom does not include imposing on others your rules. As usual, your freedom stops where the others' begins.

@divVerent > your freedom stops where the others' beginsAs someone with Libertarian leanings I wholeheartedly agree. But also as a Pagan I look at it in a historical light, and see the 2,000 year track record of Abrahamic superstitions being rammed down everyone's throat, up to and including genocide at a global scale. When an ideology has that kind of consistent track record, it's no longer defensible to continue promoting it. Similarly the "No true Scotsman" argument doesn't hold water. For all the moderate liberal Christians who are supposedly against this kind of MAGAism, I haven't yet seen nor heard any of them unblinding their eyes to what's going on and raising a concerted public objection. So as far as I'm personally concerned, the "good Christian" argument equally falls flat. So called good Christians will jump at the chance to say "Not ALL Christians..." but when it comes to actually doing anything else about it, it's nothing but the sound of crickets.

@toiletpaper@shitposter.world I have seen many speak up about it. Just not really in the US. The "land of the free, home of the brave" never was either.I guess when you get taught in school to worship a piece of cloth in stark contrast to one of the Ten Commandments, this is what you get - an utterly corrupted faith. No Christian can at a clean conscience utter the pledge of allegiance.I have to say though that most Christians speaking out against it do not even bring up their faith. Because the opposition is universal and although the faith requires it, so does common sense. There have definitely been past movements of Christians against overreach especially due to government intertwining (which specifically attacks religious freedom, and also freedom in general when then a government uses God to justify its atrocious actions). One of the many such movements was the Reformation, which finally brought everyone access to what is actually in those books; a movement that in theory should have prevented any further corruption.Too bad Americans cannot read...

@divVerent > I have seen many speak up about itGot any evidence of that? Any organised lobbying groups? Anecdotal accounts of people speaking to you personally aren't representative of "Christianity" as an ideology writ large. However 2,000 years of one genocide after another being justified on it's basis, actually is.> There have definitely been past movements of Christians against overreachJefferson's inclusion of religious liberty in the 1st amendment was specifically at the request of the Danbury Baptist Association who were concerned that if another sect of Christians came into power they would attempt to criminalise every other sect who held a differing opinion on theology.> the opposition is universal and although the faith requires it, so does common sense. You're right about everything except "the faith". If "the faith" were such a clear matter, then the objection wouldn't be necessary. What you should have said is "my interpretation". There's little evidence to indicate your interpretation is representative. For one thing, the protestant reformation was the split that created the current Christian Zionist movement, which started out with 16th century Calvanism. Nor is any other sect of Christian exempt from being implicated by the same broad brush, with maybe the minuscule exception of Unitarians and other extremely fringe heterodox groups like that. To say nothing of the fact that the same narcissistic imperialism is endemic to all the other Abrahamic superstitions too (ie. Judaism, Islam). Perhaps excepting Druze, but they're proportionally insignificant and I don't know enough about their track record to say with the same confidence.

@toiletpaper@shitposter.world Sorry, but it is really clear what "commandments" are given in the Bible. Like the part about "love thy neighbor". Or the golden rule. It did not take a Kant to figure this out - it was written ages before. In the Middle Ages, the problem was that nobody could read it so priests made up random stuff to control the people (often at the behest of a government).Since the Reformation that should not be possible anymore... at least not to make more modifications... except IT IS! Turns out enough people do not want to read but use a religion merely as an excuse to oppress others. Most do not even read the "source material" it supposedly is based on, even though they literally have a copy at home. It is almost as if the Middle Ages are back.Another problem is indeed that most Christian denominations are particular much "cheating" to expand their numbers by baptizing babies. Most of those will never visit a church in their life, yet are counted as members regardless. This artificially inflates their numbers - and also leads to many such people decide to justify their bad ideas by their so-called "Christianity" they never did a thing in their life for.

@divVerent > the "source material" it supposedly is based on, even though they literally have a copy at home.About that though ... which of the 6,000 manuscripts (mostly Koine Greek) are you referring to? Which of the 1/2 million textual discrepancies between them do you consider most authoritative? I don't think most people have a copy at home, nor are even aware that what they do have is a frankenstein's monster of creative fiction created over the course of a thousand or more years with various editions depending on which ideology was in vogue at the time. And that's even before getting into the problem of translations.> Or the golden rule. That long predates the BuyBull, and frankly the way most people phrase it "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is ass backwards (ie. Matthew 7:12 and Luke 6:31). In that form it's a glorified excuse to foist your own preferences onto the unwilling, as Christians have consistently demonstrated is their understanding. What it should say is "Do NOT do to others what THEY do not want you to do". If Christians had received it in the latter form, a lot of these historical issues would simply not have occurred.

@divVerent > this formulation made people think genocide is OKCorrect. But how in fuck did you interpret that as me implying people wanted to be genocided? They're literally mandated to force their superstitions on other people. Is that what you want for yourself also? My point is you all need to fucking learn to take "No!" for an answer, first and foremost. It's not about what "you" want.

@toiletpaper@shitposter.world Logic. If we take these propositions:P1: Person X participated in genocide.P2: Person X believed they were following a rule to "treat others like you want to be treated".The only logical consequence would be that person X believes they want others to genocide them.Except not. P2 was false. They never actually believed that. As said, the book _didn't work_.

@divVerent Since I need to spell it out... "Take No for an answer!"That's more morally valuable than the Golden Rule is relative to how Christians apply it. Particularly in light of Matthew 28:19-20 along with all the violent narcissism and anti-Pagan rhetoric which infests all the Abrahamic superstitions bar none.https://biblehub.com/matthew/28-19.htmhttps://biblehub.com/john/14-6.htmhttps://biblehub.com/1_samuel/15-3.htmJust the tip...> Sorry for understanding mathematics.Pfft. @toiletpaper@shitposter.world And as for "taking no for an answer", that is a failed idea as well, as seen also in recent legal developments."Your honor, how is this rape? I used no violence and she never said no.""Of course she didn't after you had her drink three bottles of vodka till she passed out on the floor!'The point of the weird formulation is to also catch cases like this.

@divVerent For one, I don't regard the legal system as the arbiter of morality any more than I do the BuyBull.Secondly, the entire basis of human rights is dissent. All rights are simply more specific variations on the ability to say "No" without experiencing reprisal, whether that be free speech, bodily autonomy, property rights, whatever. And of course bearing arms, because not everyone will get the memo without having to back it up by force. Even the law itself is simply a socially accepted ritual to that same effect.

@icedquinn @divVerent > christian nationalistsNot a new thing. It's as old as Christianity itself (hence all the claims of Jesus being "Lord", "King", etc). But as far as USA is concerned..."Article 11. Some books against Deism fell into my hands; they were said to be the substance of sermons preached at Boyle's Lectures. It happened that they wrought an effect on me quite contrary to what was intended by them; for the arguments of the Deists, which were quoted to be refuted, appeared to me much stronger than the refutations; in short, I soon became a thorough Deist." --Benjamin Franklinhttps://www.gutenberg.org/files/20203/20203-h/20203-h.htm"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." -- Thomas Jeffersonhttps://www.loc.gov/loc/lcib/9806/danpre.html"[wh]y have Xns. been distinguished above all people who have ever lived for persecutions? is it because it is the genius of their religion? no, it’s genius is the reverse, it is the refusing toleration to those of a different opn. which has produced all the bustles & wars on account of religion. it was the misfortune of mankind that during the darker centuries the Xn priests following their ambition & avarice & combining with the magistrates to divide the spoils of the people, could establish the notion that schismatics might be ousted of their possessions & destroyed. this notion we have not yet cleared ourselves from. in this case no wonder the oppressed should rebel, & they will continue to rebel & raise disturbance until their civil rights are fully restored to them & all partial distinctions, exclusions & incapacitations removed." -- Thomas Jeffersonhttps://founders.archives.gov/documents/Jefferson/01-01-02-0222-0007"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. MAGA is just the latest symptom of a mental illness that's been infecting the human psyche for 2,000 years.Hence the founding fathers also had to repeatedly address it over 2 centuries ago, and included a provision to curtail it directly in the 1st amendment of the US constitution.
