       @mwl if truly never pkgbasified, then how and when was the FreeBSD-base repo enabled? I'm curious. ls /etc/pkgls /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos– and then let's think about the contents of the files.

       @grahamperrin I set it up, then decided to do the jails first, but never looped back to finish. entirely my fault.# ls /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf# ls /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.confBut now I'm at the latest pkgbasify wanting pkg 2.7+ and my hosts having 2.6.2. Fortunately I have an older pkgbasify.

       actually ran pkgbasify on the bare metal install and wow, things worked much better. #headdesk I'd like to blame this fiasco on self-employment, but I'm also this dumb when employed.

       @mwl be careful, if you enable FreeBSD-base but don't install the packages (with pkgbasify), installing a port may decide to "help" you by installing some base packages that will overwrite your non-pkgbase installation, including config files.
