In the article, the author points out that the obvious AI entry points in the browser (the toolbar AI button and the omnibar) don't even use the local model. They still send your queries to Google.So you've got a ton of wasted bandwidth and storage space, no consent, no user action, no respect for user preferences (eg: deleting the file), and no privacy benefit because they route everything you type through the Google cloud anyway.

@atoponce @lain @feld I think the point is consent. Useful vs unwanted data. Sure the game download is bigger, but at least the game users consent/want it. Or they uninstall the game. Google just include it unsolicited. That's the difference.

@latelesley @atoponce @lain how do you define "useful"?The TranslateGemma model has a 4B variant that is going to be around 4GB in size. This might be what they're shipping (I haven't looked). This is a quantized version of what powers the actual Google Translate these days.Being able to do on-device / in-browser language translations is incredibly powerful and as a bonus, provides additional privacy.Why wouldn't that be useful?
