it went viral and it's one of the biggest post on X about implants ever. I'm glad it's introducing so many people to implants, but also frustrated because a lot of the replies do not know shit about fuck and make wild assumptions about this stuff

GPS implants are impossible with current technology and it doesn't take much thinking to figure out at least one out of the several obvious reasons.

@iro_miya that's really interesting with GPS implants not being possiblei wonder why because I did a bit of GPS stuff in the past and besides power consumption I see no reason why not.There is a lot of location-tracking tech that is on-demand or not using sattelites at all

@saxnot@chaos.social So on the photo attached to the post on X, we're clearly talking about a tiny implant, because it sits between the author's thumb and indexMostly it comes down to- you can't make it THAT small, Airtags may be the best trackers available and they're not that small- You can't implant a lithium ion battery, that would be extremely dangerous. As far as I know the only batteries safe enough for implants that are also commercially available are lithium titanate, and they don't have much capacity

@saxnot@chaos.social but yea it's true, if you had no regards for your safety and don't mind the fact that the battery will eventually run out, you could encase an Airtag in bioresin and have that implanted. But yea the implant the author got is obviously way too small to do any tracking ^^

@iro_miya i don't know about the sharepic and yeah gps amtenna need a minimum size to get the wave that's just physics.I don't know how small the device is that is being talked about but I searched a bit and found this smd component https://www.eetimes.com/pulse-gps-antenna-is-small-size-surface-mount/ being a 3.2 x 1.6 x 1.1 mm antenna(no processing, no battery, etc)

@saxnot@chaos.social yeah see even that is too big, glass implants are 3mm cylinders (length varies but its like 1-2cm) and you only got like 2mm of space insideAnd the GPS is only part of the problem, you also need some kind of transmitter to send the coordinates (via LoRa or mobile data?) and a battery...But yeah you could do that with a larger implant

People fear what they can't relate to or don't understand, which often leads to hate or a you're mad reaction with the urge to suppress what they deem bad.This is shitty but generally demonizing people that are genuinely believing that they are "on the good side" and "just want your best" mostly leads to disdain. So if people are open to dialogue it's generally good to have that talk so they don't see a "sick idea from a sick person" but might see that the person is actually reasonable maybe even nice.It's of course okay to not have energy for this and also to be at some point being like "fuck this" when dialogue is not possible or not leading anywhere or when being insulted.I have to admit that explaining those desires to alter the body without having any significant suffering as motivation. And more a i fancy this and it's cooool and thus i am willing to take huge risks including a small probability of death when the desire is significant enough and the body mod might be a bit affirming.While transitioning is way easier to explain in terms of benefits, i enjoy life wayy more by now, don't hate my body anymore and don't wanna die anymore, which is quite understandable to a "reasonable" person since "suicide bad".

@iro_miya @saxnot The actual trick would be something like a UHF RFID implant as those can be read at like 20m range under ideal conditions without batteries on the tag side which is... perfectly serviceable for localising someone within an environment at the very least (i.e. is creature within geofence, etc.), and would work wherever one could setup reader coverage The issue being no-one makes them, and the readers are annoying to source (as this is mostly used in industrial/warehousing scenarios)

@saxnot@chaos.social @magicatgwen@tech.lgbt this can be done with an xSLX as that's ISO 15693 which also supports long range reading, but that's way less common than UHF RFID.You could also just ask Dangerous Things to encase a UHF tag for you, they'll just do it. But also this is a massively reduced scope compared to what these people think can be done with an implant

@iro_miya @saxnot Yeah the issues is that the people thinking that are bad at scoping technology;What they want is best achieved by either locking a collar on someone with an air tag attached, or just putting one of the family tracking apps on their phoneThe long range 13Mhz stuff is interesting, but unsure what the advantage on that over the UHF RFID stuff is; it'd be interesting to test the read range on one of the 15693 implants; and to know how implantable UHF stuff would be :3

I think if you actually wanted that, you'd think about it for a lottle longer ^^Long range 13mhz is quite niche, it does allow you do have long range with smarter tags, so have your cake and eat it too? These readers can read/write multiple tags simultaneously, so you could use it to program a whole stack of tags, which is neat.If you can get your hands on such a reader I can get you someone with an ISO 15693 implant to try. I'd also be curious, neither me nor Dangerous Things know of anyone trying this.UHF stuff is implantable for sure, no one that I'm aware of has done it yet but you can just get a small enough tag and have it encapsulated
