       OK, internet.  Time for me to admit something and then solicit your advice.Admission: I have not purchased a TV in well over 20 years now.  I haven't owned a TV for at least 15 years.  📺While - yes - I have lived with folk way back in Philly who had one every so often, the last TV that I *purchased* was literally a CRT with a tube.  Tarah and I didn't have a TV at all for the near-decade that we were married.Your Advice: Is there a decent resource that you folk trust when it comes to evaluating privacy concerns about modern TVs?  The only thing I know is that, if I acquire a new set, it'll be a "frame" TV (thin bezel, matte finish) since 99% of the time it will serve as art on the wall.  I do not have any streaming subscriptions and would likely just play media from my Synology or watch YouTube.Are modern smart TVs all universally horrible from a privacy perspective, like modern cars?  Are any TVs decent about not phoning home out-of-the box?  Are some frame TVs able to be modded for privacy or are some able to be wrangled into behaving if I block a lot of well-known stuff at my firewall?Right now the only thing I have done is walk past the Samsung frame TVs at Costco and say, "Yeah, those seem nice.  Sure."If anyone wants to point me at a resource or list of the best vs the worst that are out there when it comes to finding one that isn't a 1984 Telescreen, I'd eagerly read said research.

       @deviantollam@defcon.social yes all modern "smart" tv are absolutely horrible from a privacy standpoint but not only that, most of them serves you ADS while you're using any smart app on it! on top of the app's ads!  get a LED/OLED/QLED tv, its thin and low power usage. but don't get a smart tv!! DO NOT GET A SMART TV!!! you'll regret it.  just get a hdmi tv and a little computer to watch youtube and streaming on ​:ablobcatheadbang:​

       @Stellar @deviantollam a tv without smart features will be much more expensive (if you can even find it). My plan for my next TV will be a nice smart TV that never gets WiFi/Ethernet connection. Just treat it like a dumb TV. HDMI only.

       @varx @Stellar @deviantollam Keep the packaging materials and receipt. I have a "Fire" TV that has never been connected to WiFi. After power up, about five minutes into watching something over HDMI, it will go to a black screen with a "network unavailable" message and I have to hit a button on the remote to go back to HDMI. Very annoying but I live with it because it was fantastically cheap on clearance.

       what is a frame tv?I've never bought a tv in my life -- I've always got them free second, third, or tenth-hand -- but I have switched to using a projector for movies, which are readily available with no smart features and work great.

       @Stellar @deviantollam One option, sadly not so cheap as a smart tv is to buy publig display/digital signage displays.They're usually trimmed for good duration in on-hours and some of them even include a slot for a slot-in computer of some sort.Cathode Ray Dude made a nice video about those "niche" displays ... inkl a bit of show and tell about the "OPS Modules" which are said embedded PCs you can plug in. ;)See youtube.com/watch?v=q9a3dCd1SQ…redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=… for his overview. ;)

       @deviantollam@defcon.social @hackbyte@joinfriendica.de you mean the actual screen is matte finish? for a screen as giant as a tv its rare and could be expensive to have the same matte finish that normal desk/laptop monitor have. its called the anti-glare treatment.
