       The master's tools will not destroy the master's house, but that doesn't mean they can't be used against the master's agenda. A tool only does what the hand that holds it says to do.There's a non-zero possibility that the AI coders will win, that LLM-assisted programming will actually become the expected norm. What is a maker to do in that possible future, but to use the master's tools to build his own shit that doesn't need the master's approval?Of course the collapse of the existing industry is still more likely, and to be rooted for. One cannot truly know the future except by surviving it.

       The Internet is owned by rent seekers and corpos. Yet the Fediverse exists, built with the master's tools. Don't try to tell me we're not smart enough to leverage anything useful AI can actually do, if it comes down to it.

       I would prefer a future where AI coding was a fad that passed, like Ruby on Rails or the like.But I have to be prepared to live in a world other than the one I prefer.

       Am I using AI? Not so much, really. But I am keeping a close eye on what is being done with it, and how -- what their workflows look like in projects that generate useful output. I refuse to let my own preferences leave me unprepared to exist in a world where the good guys lost.

       This is not an argument in favour of AI. It's as close to an objective fact as a human can generate: AI coding exists, and more or less works when used properly, and it's probably only going to get better at it. You and I can advocate against it all we like, and should do, but ignorance never saved anyone's life or livelihood, and educated criticism is better than yapping about imagined fears.

       We can, and should, lambaste AI for all its flaws. We can, and should, avoid using it if doing so is viable. But if it comes between using it and getting X project done on time, thus paying the bills, and being underbid by some less scrupulous arsehole using an LLM agent swarm, the rational choice is what it is. There's no ethical consumption under capitalism.

       I have the dubious, backhanded privilege of being self-employed. I make what I want to make, when I want to make it. I don't have a boss forcing AI on me. I feel bad for those who have to find ways to use it just to put food on the table.

       To be extra special clear, I fucking loathe the idea of renting a tool for programming. I don't even like renting tools from Home Depot, and I have no reason to permanently own a drywall lift.

       And some of the uses to which I've seen agents put are fucking psychotic. People are spending actual money letting swarms of programs collectively write poetry and send emails to academics. Fucking nuts.

       And this is to say nothing of people who are handing over large portions of their everyday life thinking, not just their workload, onto LLMs. The kind of person who treats a language model as an infallible oracle is not a kind of person I want anywhere near sharp tools or hazardous chemicals.
