because of pricing discussion that pops up sometimes:imagine a very barebones MNT Reform Next for like 600 EUR, which has the full cnc case, hinges, mainboard, left port board, display, 1 battery pack (of 2), mechanical keyboard, glass trackpad, side panels, and a CM5 processor module adapter, would that be interesting? the idea would be that you could:- get started with a high quality, real OSHW laptop at a lower price- add/upgrade parts at your own pace- bring your own compute module

@mntmn isn't CM5 a bad base for a laptop device? No sleep mode doesn't fully power off etc.?Also I see the CM5 8GB for around 209€ and the 16GB version for 360€ (both without MMC) not exactly "cheap".Other than that sure sounds like an idea.

@mntmn I'd be more likely to move my existing modules between shells and it'd make it easy to right-size my daily carry if the swap is quick. Granted, I have a next on order already but I would be okay with reusing what I have if the Qualcomm chips eventually become an option. If i end up with a spare RK3588 at some point, it'd be ideal for a desktop build.While I'm not a raspberry pi fan, having a diversified supply for compute is a great option.

@mntmn "would what be interesting?"Yes.As for "bringing your own compute module", it'd be neat if you built a laptop that's just an alternate case+cooler for tiny desktop PCs (mini-ITX boards, thin clients, Mac Mini, Optiplex Micro: etc).It's not a very OSHW thing to do, but still a big middlefinger to Big Laptop.

@mntmn You could strip out a few more things and keep it useful...Ship without the battery cells, just the battery module, since one of the compelling features is that you can get cells off-the-shelf? Without the CM5 module? Some folks have old mnt/reform modules collecting dust...I recall you had a mnt/reform desktop design at one point; how feasible would the MNT Reform Next be to ship without keyboard, trackpad, monitor? With the possibility to add them later? An a la carte option?

@mntmn I think even before current economy that would interest a lot of people who just want a long-term laptop without much spec needs but even more now, and I don't think I've ever seen a first-hand repairable laptop at around 600€. (Like my thinkpad T485 was at ~800€ in early 2020 and compared to MNT hardware it's barely repairable and more like few parts being swappable)

@TheOneDoc @mntmn Yeah haven't tested trackpad so no idea but keyboard seems really nice.Also reminds me that from time to time I feel like getting the trackball parts as a base to make a desktop one with nicely light buttons (RSI my beloathed).

@lanodan @mntmn I don't like trackballls but they are super usefull for some people who have problems with mice.A friend of mine is using 'em since way back in the 90's for that reason and an other friend who started to develop Arthritis is doing much better since he switched.I usually only touch the mouse when I need to do some graphics/CAD stuff and can't be arsed to connect a tablet or when gaming (I hate Game Controlers)About the trackpad. Hardened glass and a larger size is just super comfortable when it comes to multi touch trackpads.

@mntmn I think the biggest thing keeping people who love your machines from jumping in is the price. I was able to convince my lab to buy one for me but otherwise I wouldn't have been able to justify it. For 600 plus a CM5 I could have swung it

@mntmn while I don't mind spending premium on a premium product, a "starter" esition would be a fantastic concept. I think most of us spend money on different processors and other updates anyway, so having a base for lower starting cost is a good idea imho

I would have bet, that those people who go "it's too expensive" are the same ones who go "it's too thick" and "it's too heavy" and "battery life is not enough" - basically they want a macbook pro for USD 200 and even then they wouldn't buy it because it's not from Apple and everything they said before was just a stupid excuse for their ignorance.But looking at this thread, really seems I was wrong. Maybe I'm getting too cynical. Gives me hope to see it.
