       Tarkovsky's Stalker is absolute kino and worthy of its praise, yet there was always something irking, even long before fully watching the film Wednesday night.Tarkovsky's Stalker suffers the same minor flaw that Kubrick's The Shining suffers in that the praise afforded to them as kino cinema neglects that they butcher their identity as an adaptation in order to subtlety tell a different story all together (and in the case of The Shining better story). If you go in expecting fidelity to Roadside Picnic or the same kind of atmosphere as the game STALKER, you will be disappointed and it will sour your watching experience.For example, the Zone is meant to contain many anomalies, while, in the movie, you only see at most one, maybe three (subtle time dilation when entering the Zone, the clear teleportation trap in the Room's antechamber, and possibly indoor raining in the Room). Both the scant anomalies and Monkey's powers are framed in a way to make viewers doubt that they are truly otherworldly and are merely natural phenomena that can be misconstrued as paranormal. Monkey's telekinesis at the end is especially scrutinized by snobbish, faggy, yet intelligent critics who note Tarkovsky may have intended what was explicitly clear in the book to be a nothing burger but look special to test one's faith in the movie's Zone, which is mankind's spiritual experience.Instead, you should come in expecting a movie about men trying to find the lost spiritual experience of mankind in the spirit-less, crumbling, and inglorious ruins of Brezhnev's post-war Soviet Union, using the scenario of Roadside Picnic as a very loose base. You could argue that the directors and movie staff did not want to spoil the experience from telling audience the truth that the movies treated their sources as cut-and-paste material for film fodder. Fans and critics alike have no excuse and should make it clear what new viewers should expect, when praising films like these.

       The tl;dr message, I guess, is to always expect that adaptations, no matter how actually faithful or claimed to be faithful, to be very unfaithful to the source someway, somehow even if how they adapt and change plot, themes, and character is genius, like Tarkovsky's Stalker or Kubrick's The Shining.

       A S.T.A.L.K.E.R. movie today would actually be a live action series exclusive to streaming services where Strelok is shooting his way through the Zone while saying a quip after EVERY kill, and also saying some stupid ZOG propaganda mixed with sarcastic remarks here and there (MAYBE they also go ahead and massacre the source material too while they're at it and make it something completely different from what I said *COUGH COUGH* Fallout)
