So what's a non-garbage TV brand these days? I don't even need it to be smart as I will just plug a computer anyways, but they're all smart nowadays...So basically, a non-garbage TV that won't cuck me from non-smart features if I don't put it on the WIFI, because I absolutely won't

Not that I trust them not to run a bunch of stuff in the background but did find it interesting that I was provided the option.

@coolboymew my parents bought a new tv not too long ago. i installed it for themthe first thing that appears when you turn it on for the first time: Google's term and conditions, license agreements, privacy agreements and all that bullshitcan't do anything without accepting every single one of them. can't change the volume, can't change the input, nothing. you HAVE to accept all those agreements before you can do anything

And does not do that weird smoothing thing (I forget what it is called) that a lot of TVs do now and days that boomers love.I think i can dig up what model it was....whoops it was a TCL not Hisense but here it is all the same if interested. I paid $240 USD for it

@rain unfortunately every single ones I've seen that are non-smart are either not 1080p or just not big enough. I just gotta go with a Smart TV that's the least "evil" possible insteadI could also just check the pawn shops around here, but last I checked most TVs they had had pretty major scratches or weren't thin enough for what I need it for

@rain @coolboymew You can still find them if you're okay with 1080p.It seems like if you want 4K (and especially fancy 4K with stuff like HDR) you basically can't, because all the SoCs readily available on the market to power these TVs for any reasonable price only support Android TV.Personally I have a hisense, but the input select button on the remote doesn't actually open an input selector, it sends you to the home screen with the input list pre-selected, and honestly I find that annoying enough for me to not readily recommend hisense TVs to anyone

@coolboymew GPX is the only company I know of that is still producing dumb TVs. The only "smart" feature is the ability to play video and image files off of removable storage.Though I haven't tried them out myself, but I imagine the firmware is similar to the GPX Projector I got for my brother and it works great.https://gpx.com/in-home/televisions.html

@coolboymew There's a basic offline mode for Google TV called "Basic Mode," but it's limited to TCL, Hisense, Sony, Xiaomi, and some other brands. It would've been nice if those plasma TVs made a comeback, but those are too expensive and too heavy.

@coolboymew @rain @Suiseiseki I have a Hisense TV. It's pretty good for the most part. It's a Roku TV, it'll display banner ads sometimes on the screensaver but that doesn't really bother me (it is gay though). The only real problem I've had with it is that it can't take display port to HDMI for whatever reason which probably isn't a big deal for most people.

@rain @coolboymew For hisense it opens the home screen, with the input list pre-selected. which means the video and audio of what you were watching cuts out. And you can't even return to where you were by hitting input again or back. you have to hit a separate "close" button to return.Also the input list isn't static. It will list online inputs first and offline ones later. So your input list won't always be "HDMI1 HDMI2 HDMI3 HDMI4". If only HDMI2 and HDMI4 have a signal, the order of the list will instead be "HDMI2 HDMI4 HDMI1 HDMI3". I haven't found a setting to change this. So I can't rely on "input, then two taps right" actually landing me on HDMI3.I dunno man, I'm still fine with it because it got my TV really cheap, but the fact that something as simple as selecting an HDMI input is such a pain prevents me from recommending hisense. The UX for switching inputs is ass, and it's basically the ONE thing I regularly do. Powering the device on/off and switching inputs are the only things I need passable UX for.
