@mntmn this is something I keep coming back to. when people are constantly slamming into brick walls trying to procure compute for stuff at work, people are gonna burn out and get fed up of constantly fighting uphill battles, especially at orgs where upper management are constantly proselytising about the exact technology causing the problems in the first place. staff turnover is a major problem.

@gsuberland @mntmn i can't imagine how hard it must be to get current gen parts in production quantities. Everyone i know building any kind of hardware is dealing with issues, one fab house is even having delays getting fiberglass laminates.I'm sure current gen CPUs and RAM are unobtainiun to say nothing of GPUs. The only reason I'm able to do the recent upgrades i am is that it's dumpster dived hardware that was being retired due to $bigtech buying the new hotness

@azonenberg @gsuberland @mntmn Even the old stuff is getting hard; I watch one refurb site where DDR4 DIMMs are disappearing damn quickly, even the 8GB ones.

@penguin42 @gsuberland @mntmn well ok except the motherboard which i ebay'd because none of the more normal channels for procuring supermicro gear had a dual ice lake Xeon mainboard in stock.And icelake isn't exactly new tech but it beats Skylake I guess?

@penguin42 @gsuberland @mntmn and the only reason i have that connection is ngscopeclient, the guy is explicitly trying to make sure the hardware his lab is decommissioning goes to benefit f/oss projects in need of big iron for build servers etc

@penguin42 @azonenberg @gsuberland @mntmn I'd love to replace some of my DDR4 DIMMs. There is a fault in one of the 4 16GB ones, but I'm not going to be able to afford to replace them (at +£1000 for all).

@derickr if only one stick is bad you should be able to pull one at a time until you find it then either run without that stick or buy only a single replacement

@azonenberg Yeah. Annoyingly, memtest86+ only sees errors in like 1 out of 4 times. Sigh. I would prefer it to just always fail, not "once in a while". For now, badram does the job okayish.

@mntmn I'm convinced that creative reuse of existing hardware is going to (have to) be more and more of a thing in the next few years. Whether that's making better use of older machines, using phones in lieu of desktops (more and more Android phones are getting that ability now and it's been improving)... Maybe lapdocks will actually start to catch on? They don't need a CPU or memory after all

@mntmn Zitron had an interesting but unanswered question related to this a while ago: Nvidia and other manufacturers are pumping out hardware 24/7, and appear to be getting paid for it in actual dollars instead of the usual AI industry monopoly money. But many (IIRC >80% according to Zitron) of the giga-datacenters that would be needed to house and power all of this keep getting delayed, cancelled and/or turn out to be scams.So where is all the stuff actually going?

@azonenberg @gsuberland @mntmn Yeah even old server DDR4 now gets recycled from decommissioned machines into new one's it seems.Can't imagine how bad it is to be a small player in the computer and server space.

@ftg @gsuberland @mntmn i literally just upgraded my whole lab's ram after scoring some old server ddr4.Then the old ram i replaced with that got recycled further to upgrade even older machines.
