@Blender I have read both and I still don't understand why Blender is accepting financial dependence on a corporation that is actively destroying the open web with scraping, fueling the ongoing slop contribution denial of service attack against foss maintainers, is a major player in the industry that is actively harming digital artists, and numerous other harms; nor do I understand how you expect us not to be angry and heartbroken by this news. Perhaps you could explain it to us.

@Blender This is a company whose technology is actively being used to bomb people randomly. This is one of the companies fueling the demand for overproduction of data centers, which in turn is bringing coal plants back online to meet the electricity demands. They have done so much harm to everybody in this world, I don't think we are going to be able to fully heal from it for decades.

@Blender@mastodon.social For what? So that you can add AI slop tools to Blender? No thank you, I will use an old version that does not implement these or use a fork that straight up removes these. And dont expect people to be happy with this, you're going to lose supporters because of this. These companies are cancer, AI is cancer, and you know it.

@Blender the minimal morally defensible position is to reject genai entirely. it's inherently abusive technology, built on mountains of violence and has the purpose of devaluing humanityif you want anthropic to sponsor you, sure, but then also have a full genai ban and a hostile stance against it

@Blender I did. Accepting money from a plagiarism-as-a-service company is still overwhelmingly disrespectful to artists. Your policies do not make this okay, Anthropic has no place in any community that even pretends to care about artists and creatives. Whoever approved this should still be fired.

@Blender Point to your policies all you want. The correct choice here is to not accept the money, and to tell Anthropic & their ilk to go away. Take a meaningful stance against the companies that are actively hurting and stealing from the artists that depend on tools like blender. Welcoming them, accepting their money, is a clear signal that you care more about the money than the people they harm - including many of your own users - to get it.

@Blender you guys... I have been financially supporting you for like 15 years, and I help run the SLC Blender User Group to promote free and open tools for everyone. Reading this breaks my heart. As an artist who's art has been stolen by this plagiarism machine, and as a coder who's code has been stolen by this plagiarism machine, this feels like a pretty hard slap in the face. Your community doesn't want you taking dirty money like this from unethical tech bros. Please reconsider.

@Blender@mastodon.social really dissappointing. i know money is needed, but even then, AI corpos should never be allowed to come anywhere close to projects used to create art. you are basically alienating most artists using your software, your core user base. i'm pretty sure you don't really want that, so you should reconsider this decision

@domi Okay but...You do realize that donations to FOSS projects won't kill them, right? That the first thing they'll do is stop the donations?Heck, that they might *use* the donations to get more investment? "Anthropic sponsors Blender, the biggest and baddest in FOSS 3D modeling space" is a big talking point.

@art_codesmith if they stop the donations - who cares? this drama will get forgotten in two weeks, two months tops; and blender’s income sources are so diversified that one anthropic stopping funding isn’t enough to kill them.as for investment - I severily doubt that potential investors in anthropic will know what “blender” is. but even if they do - if you’d read the article I linked, you’d know that sooner or later (hint: sooner) the investment firms are gonna run out of funds to continue throwing money at the wall, and their product isn’t profitable in ANY way.Anthropic will die. There’s not enough money in the world to save their business strategies.

@domi I feel like people don't realize the corps reputation-launder via philanthropy far, far more than they do to influence the recipient themselves. Do they want influence? Sure, but the positive press being done for them about "look at what this corp did for this little group!" pays dividends more.Like if folks wanna be upset go find what extremely recent thing Anthropic is trying to bury with positive press instead, that's the real story here. Any bonus infighting is just a useful distraction for them.

@Blender congrats on securing funding, I get this is important for opensource projects.personally I don't get the outrage, Meta, Wacom, Nvidia, Microsoft, AMD, Adobe, Apple, and Netflix weren't scary enough but Anthropic does it? :dragnthaenk: how do people think opensource projects get funded

@anthropy @Blender while those companies are scummy as hell, at least they produce a product.anthropic essentially just walks into public art exibits, takes shitty photos without asking the artist and then sells those as prints at low prices driving the original artist out of buisness. They literally cannot function without theft.

@ChocoDrawing @Blender most of those companies have produced image generators of their own.I get why artists are upset about genAI, but then why not get some money from that branch back to the artists? as long as blender doesn't make blender worse, I don't see any (new) issue to be honest

@anthropy @Blender I was under the impression that an opensource art-tool had an actual spine. That software made for artists actually respected art(and human life, anthropic literally helped the US bomb schoolkids ffs) The morally correct choice would have been to publicly announce that they refused. They have funding, they don't NEED that money. But like so many others they chose greed over integrity, they sold their users/souls for a quick buck.I'm not surprised, just disapointed.

@ChocoDrawing @Blender I mean, not to be rude, but have you literally ever donated to blender yourself? I'm just saying, statistically the chance is very low, and these things do need funding. As far as I can tell by their blogpost this is just about API expansions which will be welcome for anyone who writes scripts that interact with blender.(also just to nitpick, AFAIK was Anthropic the one who said 'no' to US defense contracts, and OpenAI jumped on that opportunity instead)

@fsiddi Why take corporate money? Why take THIS corporate money? Why not throw this out to the Blender community at large and include them in this decision BEFORE accepting this money? The complete disregard for user's very valid concerns with regard to AI and especially Anthropic AI money in a beloved FOSS project is insulting in the current world. How could you not foresee the blowback?

@fsiddi @noondlyt i believe blender should have a full ban on any genai contributions and should have an outwardly hostile stance against this technologywhy? because it's abusive technology created using lots of violence with the purpose of devaluing humanitythe whole discussion of where the money came from is valid, and i also do not think accepting money from anthropic is morally okay. but at least be morally consistent in rejecting this abusive technology

Unfortunately, I'll take this as a sign of a pro-AI cultural shift at the Blender Foundation. What a disappointment.

@davidrevoy @Blender The one thing that should be kept in mind is according to the Funding Policy, "The Blender Development Fund is a donation platform. Individuals and organizations contribute to support Blender's development without acquiring decision-making power over the project's direction."There have been sponsors like Nvidia, Intel, AMD, etc before. While they aren't directly AI companies, they are now involved with that. While money can certainly influence, they aren't taking control of the project. I do understand your concern, I just wanted to present it from another perspective

@agile Yes, but editing the picture to put their logos on the same line, side by side, writing an official blog post without a critic or a paragraph to acknowledge the risk (eg. writing they'll go extra careful about it, that community don't need to worry), all of that looks more to me like unfolding a red carpet and being happy and proud about it, or part of the deal, and a serious blind spot (intentional or not) about knowing their community.

@fsiddi Definitely for the tone. It felt a bit cold and corporate. I'm sure a follow up post (maybe more personal?) can fix it, maybe mentioning how the team feels about this sponsor, or a reminder about your policy for how sponsors are not influencing your decisions (I know it exists). Also, the header picture, with logo side by side made me sad; it visually conveyed "a collab", " a partner". It felt like unrolling the red carpet for a company that doesn't deserve it, imo.Good luck with it.

@mastodonmigration I'm sorry that I keep being critical about this, but I really feel like I have to point out that these questions hardly make sense> Is generative AI code used or permitted to be used in Blender development? It's impossibile to determine for sure whether a PR contains AI generated code. Any big FOSS project will contain AI generated code pretty soon, regardless of its policy. > Are integrations between Blender and AI companies permitted?Blender exposes an Python (1/2)

@niccolove@fosstodon.org @mastodonmigration@mastodon.onlineIt's impossibile to determine for sure whether a PR contains AI generated code. This feels like an odd reasoning against possible policies prohibiting AI-supported contributions though, isn't it? Just because some might willfully attempt to circumvent or otherwise break a project's contribution guidelines does not in any way seem like enough of a reason to not even try?To use a slightly hyperbolic example to further explain what I mean; isn't that kind of like suggesting there's no point making laws against theft or murder, because some will try/succeed at either anyway? Please do let me know if I misunderstood what you meant!

@mastodonmigration API, it seems absurd to me that Blender would police who can use the API. I doubt it's even possible.> Are Ai companies going to be able to train their models on Blender user's content? If models are publicly available then it probably already happened. If not, then obviously not. How would a donation change anything here?

@niccolove@fosstodon.org @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online fair point, but doesn't this then also suggest that you don't think clean room projects are actually possible, as there's not necessarily a way one could make absolutely certain everyone involved hasn't at least peaked over the proverbial fence? It feels a bit like the suggestion here is to not even try to have people adhere to certain code of conducts and/or contribution guidelines, simply because it might not be 100% detectable (or otherwise provable) that someone broke the rules/guidelines.I do understand your point about unenforceable rules, I guess I just don't like the counter proposal of just letting everyone go nuts with these tools, consequences be damned. Surely there has to be another option?

@jibsaram The reasonable option IMO is the most obvious one: treat contributions as we've always done, putting the responsibility of submitted code in the author, regardless of the tools used to make the code. If the code is bad, or the MR misses obvious parts / is low quality, then it should be denied (and the author potentially banned, if it's that bad!). We don't need any extra AI rule IMO, just take responsibility for what you submit.

@niccolove@fosstodon.org thank you for sharing your thoughts! I fear it might be a bit too naive to not think we need some kind of guard rails in place, but I'll be more than happy if I end up being proven wrong on that. We're certainly dealing with interesting times, to say the least. I feel for FOSS developers/maintainers who are struggling to deal with the added burden they're faced with these days. I can understand the desire to try to find ways to deal with this more proactively, even though there's obviously no silver bullet.

@niccolove @jibsaram @mastodonmigration imean , tbh i dont think being “enforceable” matters for a foss project’s contributing guidelines . what those are is usually a code of conduct regarding the development process . it codifies the project’s stance on the matter . it shows support for political actions in a certain direction . it means a lot to both contributors , users , and others .its a “trust” thing more than a “policy” thing . if i go contribute to a project with a certain CoC , and then in my private life act explicitly against that CoC , nobody will ever know . but that CoC being there still Means Something
