Hezbollah released footage of one of their fiber optic FPV kamikaze drones taking out several IDF soldiers.Because the drone is connected via a fiber optic cable, it's pratically unjammable.

Zero situational awareness. I heard a tiny little drone in the park, it was a children's toy about the size of my fist. If soldiers can't hear a much larger one bearing down on them, they ain't gonna make it. Come to think of it, that's exactly what they did. Hezbollah probably seized the now uncrewed tank. 😆

FPV drones that use unshielded fiber-optic wire can still be jammed by lasers so all the the IDF had to do was to at least try that to have some level of survivability against them (since hezbollah drones are probably using lighter, unshielded fiber optic wire for cost and simplicity).

@ferrarilegends @Terry no you can'tbesides cutting the fiber and shining the laser straight into the end, you won't be able to cause any detectable amount of light at the other end, let alone enough to disrupt communication.i tested this with an optical power meter last time this was on the tl

@sapphire @Terry @ferrarilegends delivering enough power into a 125 micron wide glass noodle that's flopping through the air to soften it enough that it breaks seems a little unlikely.unlike cutting metal or something that happens at maybe a couple inches it's a very wide range to focus on, and if you're melting glass at a hundred yards out, what's it gonna do to your optics that are right there at the source?

All fibre optic cable is shielded, that's what the cladding is. You're doing nothing to it with light shining on it from the side. On the other hand moderately powerful lasers can damage the CMOS sensor which blinds the drone.

depending on the coating of the fiber-optical wire, a sufficiently powerful laser could also couple onto the wire and fry the photodiodes of a CCD or any CMOS sensors.

@ferrarilegends @Terry @sapphire it could not.the cladding is glass, the core is also glass but with a different refractive index. the total internal reflection happens at the core/cladding boundary, not at the surface of the cladding.

I KNOW LASERS ARE VERY COHERENT BUT THERE'S SOME VARIANCE STILL, SOME DISPERSIONSO WHEN I FIRST SAW THAT VID I THOUGHT OH THEY SPOTTED THE FIBER TRAILING BEHIND A SLEEPER DRONE ON THE GROUND AND BLASTED IT WITH A LASER AT A VERY OBTUSE ANGLE AND SOME OF THAT LIGHT ENDED UP BOUNCING INSIDE OF THE FIBER AND FRYING EITHER END OF THE CONNECTION

@nugger @skylar @ferrarilegends @Terry even with a direct contact tap bending the fiber in a sharp radius it's difficult to couple enough light into it from the side to disrupt the signal, let alone cause any damage. according to research I've read what works best is a slow square wave

@nugger @Terry @ferrarilegends it does notgetting light in is way harder than getting light to leak out. there's some loss in tight bends and from splices, connectors, and impurities in the glass.if they can operate in the daytime and unspool thousands of feet of fiber in direct sunlight and still not allow enough light to enter the core that it disrupts communication, getting light in at one tiny point is hopeless.
