       Next most stupid thing right after measuring 18650s.Apparently of those buzzing AC demagnetizers may likely not obliterate the caliper's electronics so let's try one of those I guess

       I ventured into the comment section of r/machinists to try to see if there was anecdotal evidence of wreckage, and yet another reminder of how much I despise the average reddit commenter, truth wielder and speaker of absolutes, who doesn't ever consider the possibility about being wrong about anything.

       @erin I'm pretty sure calipers don't mind, but now they feel "sticky" when closed and that annoys the hell out of me.

       @nadia ooh fair, I guess the magnets I deal with are too small to cause that level of magnetisation. Though I wonder why most calipers even use ferritic stainless in the first place..

       @erin @nadia Martensite is basically ferrite with trapped carbon. So to be hardenable you need to be ferritic.And once you've formed martensite you'll be magnetic anyways, since martensite is magnetic (if slightly less so than ferrite)

       @la @erin I guess one of those non-magnetic stainless would be both hard to machine and not heat treatable, and Manufacturers Hate Them!!!1Funny thing I have a pair of Cheapo plastic calipers from ali _specifically_ to measure batteries, powered on devices and such, but alas, :neocat_woozy:

       @erin FWIW I had never seen this happen when measuring smaller neodymium magnets, your typical 6x2 and such. But this was a chonky 12x3 and oh girl did it snap.

       @nadia @erin the martensitiv stainless I work with is considered more of a pain than your typical 1.4301, though I personally prefer it

       The cheap AC demagnetizer worked. Calipers are no longer sticky and still read well, noice.
