RE: https://mastodon.social/@warandpeas/116467205610853524You probably saw it last week-end: @warandpeas replicated the "unified" VS "split" panels experiments poll. They obtained a result... totally inverted compare to mine! 😮 A very interesting result I tried to analyse in a paragraph (update on the footer of my original article): https://www.davidrevoy.com/article1138/unified-vs-split-panels-experimenting-with-publishing-digital-comics-on-the-fediverse#when-the-webcomic-war-and-peas-replicates-the-experimentRT: https://mastodon.social/users/warandpeas/statuses/116467205610853524

@davidrevoy @warandpeas Since War And Peas has been 4 panel for a while it can make some sense. least from since i started reading it. However i can see the pros and cons of split over unified. As long as the content is good i am pretty easy going either way :DKeep up the amazing work

@davidrevoy @warandpeas Your explanation seems right, I would have said the same.On my phone, I don't even need to put war and peas on full screen to see everything.(But I didn't thought of the work behind that kind of "epured" style. Thank you, I love seing artists talking about each others like that.)

@Mirppc I was curious by your "for a while", and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_and_Peas#Publishing says they started posting weekly since... 2011 🤯 I feel bad for knowing their art since only the post-covid era.

@davidrevoy @warandpeas Roonie Rabbit tried it as well, & reverted to single 4-panel image. The difference is; read the whole comic inline just by pausing scroll, vs. 5 clicks / taps.

@nartagnan Oh yes, I'm a big believer of the 'Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication' mantra, even if it's a bit impossible for me to apply it to my style (at the moment). I'm made of another wood. Their consistency in style, storytelling and theme tells a lot about a very deep artistic choice. Very Pop-art, love it.

@borup Thank you, yes, the art style have definitely different goals between War and Peas who find the most digestible communication (and master it with this clean line-art style) and my heavy painting art that is a baggage I'm carrying because of my past as a concept-artist/art director, board game and book cover illustrator.

@metaning True, asking the audience an extra click of effort is really bad; especially for discoverability: less a chance an audience not reading comics who got the comic in their timeline after a share/boost will do the extra effort of clicking the content and browsing it (compare to simply reading it from distance, without interacting with the post itself).

@ArneBab @borup Thank you! When I wrote the 'baggage', I was thinking mainly to the heavy production and long hours of painting inherited by such a technique.Probably not the most effective for this type of web format and comic in general, but now totally part of my style, so I sort of accepted it.

@davidrevoy I think you have a lot more plot in each single image. In their experiment they also have only one person speaking per panel, so it’s like the panels speak with each other, while your panels each host two sides of the conversation in distinct-feeling scenes.@warandpeas

@davidrevoy may be the reason is beautiful art vs. functional flat style? *is not that surprised 🙀*I think the people want to enjoy your art in a higher resolution then a simple comic of some lines that just want to send a message 😸

@Zelzius Both are beautiful, but I see what you mean with "beautiful art vs. functional", in the sens of intentionally made for being more beautiful than functional on one side, and more functional than beautiful on the other side. Thank you for sharing.

@kawunngg Yes, the four pictures limitation should be lifted, imo. It would be probably easy to keep the same user interface here, and just write a +4 or +6 over the last thumbnails to indicate it's a longer series. A lot of graphic novels artist would enjoy this, imo.

@marnic Exact.

@davidrevoyYes, okay. My wording was probably a bit unfortunate. I didn't mean to criticize War and Peas' comics in any way. I follow both of you, not just for the content, but also for the visuals. With War and Peas' comics, the art style allows for a much lower resolution to convey the visual content effectively. This is in contrast to your artwork, where so much detail would be lost, and you paint all your pictures so beautifully. It's simply a matter of how well

@Zelzius No problem for the wording, I understood what you meant immediately without reading in it bad intentions; but I prefered with the 'both are beautiful' just be sure to disambiguate this possible reading of "beautiful Vs.." comparison. Thank you for the feedback!

@davidrevoy @warandpeas i think beside what others already pointed out (e.g. your wonderful style making every picture in the panel fun and joy to explore on it's own), it's a completely different thing for me, because - your text is much smaller, so most of it I can't read on my smartphone without the need of zooming (that normally doesn't happen with w&p)- your graphics are such a main part of the story, they a kind of spoil the end if seen at once. I love the way you do it now: 4 separate ones I can enjoy step by step and larger on it's own and being able to find it as one panel (for sharing) and more on your website. Thank you anyway! It's lovely!

I concur with both findings. War and Peas has a simple line style and a setup for a punch line.Pepper and Carrot are feasts for the eyes, and separated images make them easier to savor.@davidrevoy @warandpeas

@davidrevoy @warandpeas What I’m hearing is that Mastodon (or rather activitypub/whatever other standards are involved. Anyone who knows just interpolate on your own:)) needs support for online comics. If all the metadata(and no 4 max limit) was there, with a few simple preferences each of us get the experience we most enjoy for each comic.Plus bonuses such as better search (this is a case where I do want search. Nobody in their right mind wants to search whatever *I* post), better info, better links, etc.Comics posts are a bit different, and that’s good.(Another random bonus, easy and reliable filtering!)

@davidrevoy @warandpeas I can't really answer that as a single question.I prefer reading multiple panels.I prefer sharing one panel because sharing multiple to people on other platforms is hard.So my preference is single panels and then one combined panel. But sometime then you hit image limits.

@davidrevoy @warandpeasWar and peas is rather simplified art. Nothing to enjoy zoomed in. Your art however is rich and detailed and i often zoom in and admire your technique. :-) the split panels make this enjoyment far easier. Font size is also a factor, as you're often communicating more of a story which needs zooming in to enjoy. War and Peas usually has fewer words.Together the results make perfect sense.

@davidrevoy To illustrate how it looks in my Masto client, requiring 4 clicks to open and read through the panels, and a 5th to close the image window. Add to that my Masto client spawns images in the centre of my middle display, whereas I read the feed on my right (of three) displays. As a single image, it's always shown un-cropped, inline.

@davidrevoy @warandpeas For my weary old eyes the four separate pictures are a relieve. It was a pain for me, zooming in and out and moving the picture. Thanks for the change David.
