This is cool!In the #Netherlands we have this orange things on trash bins so people can put in empty cans that people can return for a small deposit I just talked a while with an elderly man who was biking around and collecting these, he told me he earned a few hundred euros a month extra this way since he’s with pension and has plenty of time and wants to keep things cleanLove those creative solution!

@stux @10meisterbaelle In Germany there is the slogan "Pfand gehört daneben" roughly "deposit goes next to the bin"And such devices in some places as well.But it's sad that the poor have to rely on the lazyness (to bring their deposit back themself) of the middle class.

@stux I've seen some similar things on some german trashcans as well. I've also seen stickers on trashcans advising people not to throw empty bottles into the trashcan, but rather to put them next to the trashcan so others can collect and return these bottles without having to risk injuries when searching for these inside the trashcan.

@stux I put them in paper shopping bags and put next to big trash cans. Mostly because I have no time much to deposit them myself.

@stux I owned a corner shop in Wales decades ago when fizzy drinks were still sold in returnable glass bottles. The refund was very small and adults didn't generally bother, but it still worked because children brought them in, including bottles they found. I received far more empty bottles than I sold fizzy drinks. Then manufacturers gave up on glass bottles.

@stux That's great!In Germany, putting empty cans and bottles that have desposit beside trash bins is quite common. But be aware: In #Dortmund they have already charged some people for littering... 🙄

@stux on one hand sounds nice because the elderly gets some movement and extra money, on the other hand sounds like a weird social system if elderly have to collect the trash from younger generations…

@stux In NSW Australia there is a ten-cent deposit on most cans and bottles. To earn a few hundred dollars - say $300 - a month, though, you'd need to find, transport, store and return 3000 items items. It'd be a full time job.When I was in school (lo, these many years hence), the local milk bar used to pay a deposit on drink bottles, but they made the mistake of storing them in a bin out the back. We would go and raid the bin after hours and return the bottles over and over and over again....

@stux oh we have similar things here in Germany in a few places, tooalso people being fined for putting bottles next to bins, because law and order (jerks).

@stux that's a really nice thing. In Copenhagen we have something similar. The first bins got installed 11 years ago.
