@jnsI see this (disclaimer: I'm not a dev) a little more holistically, as just the latest symptom of a much larger disease: our discipline desperately lacking discipline.Is "AI" abominable? Heck yeah. Is it wholly on another level of abomination compared to:Electron crapnpm insanityframeworks, frameworks, and more frameworkspreexisting unscrupulous practices of devs and corporations?Debatable.For me, I'm going to ride out the AI hellscape sticking with FOSS 99% of the time, avoiding slop where I can, and trying to build skills in areas untouched by the disease (and not just the latest symptom).

@rl_dane I think LLM usage is worse than electron/npm insanity etc... by a long shot. By definition only huge corps with lots of resources(money) can spider(steal) enough content to ingest data and train the models. And those corps happen to all be tech-feudalists, some borderline neo-nazi. Nothing good is going to come of this, and it ought to be fought tooth and nail.

@jns @rl_dane If you use electron you now depend on a bit corporation to maintain you gui, because you don't have a chance to maintain that yourself and it will bitrot fast.If you use LLMs you code (slowly?) becomes a source blob so you need a big corp to maintain that tool so you can do anything.You're kinda fucked either way

@kabel42 @rl_dane yuck.. yeah :( never used it personally....not that i'd ever be tempted to use electron for anything :p I already hate web development enough, thank you - there's actually nice toolkits for desktop - i don't know why you'd want to bring webdev-hell to the desktop, but people are weird these days :p

@jns @rl_dane I've only used electron apps, not developed any. I think the one advantage is, that you have a lot more options for layout than most other toolkits, especially if you already know webdev. And it works on desktop and mobile.For some reason all electron apps i know have grown fat and slow over time.

@jns @kabel42Electron is hard to avoid, sometimes.It's really the only option for a Signal desktop client, for example. (There is a Gnome one, but Gnome apps are a pain to get working if you're not running a full desktop.)

Does it allow FOSS clients you changed yourself, or does it mandate their official US-american binaries? Does it work without a phone number?
