       @SwiftOnSecurity The concept came from 2 novelties:1. Special Relativity saying that mass & energy are interconvertible.2. Radioactive elements (U and Th) emitting energy spontaneously, losing mass.It was an obvious step to look at spontaneous releasers of energy from mass and dream of some way to speed decay up to make a bomb.  Hahn and Strassmann were looking for that and discovered fission.

       @SwiftOnSecurity Once you know E=mc^2, it’s “simply” a problem of figuring out the best way to take the easiest form of mass and convert it into energy.I think it was mentioned in Oppenheimer; everyone knew an atomic weapon was possible, and it was a race for how, not if.
