I was loving my 8bitdo controller a ton for retro games and JRPG’s but I ran into some limitations for No Man’s Sky and probably for Cyberpunk when I start that. So I’m feeding the Nintendo greed machine and being irresponsible with money. Time to feel bad all day.

@aceattveg I saw you playing last night! What limitations were you hitting though in NMS?

@SitaDulip the 8bitdo triggers are analogue and feel super creaky and mushy- I never had to use them so much before and it makes scanning unpleasant. The rumble motor is very strong and is all or nothing so it was hurting my hands- and even turning it down to 30%- there’s nothing the 8bitdo can do with that setting, it’s full force. Then the analogue stick itself was starting to hurt my thumb- stick cover helped but then it was hitting the controller body and felt weird.

@aceattveg All very valid, so I hear you there. Often times I have to turn off the hepatic nature of PS5 triggers because I don't find the experience all that enjoyable or comfortable. But man do I love NMS.

@SitaDulip I used to have a PS5 and the haptic triggers were… interesting. I always felt like I was going to break something. Joycon rumble works good with NMS and is fully adjustable so the Pro should work good as well. And it has digital triggers with less travel since that’s how Nintendo went with the system.I was tempted to just use joycons in the first place but the sticks aren’t as precise and I can only recharge them with the console itself.

@aceattveg For what it's worth I love my Pro controller for the Switch 1, and still use it. I'm interested to know what you think about the Switch 2 ones.

@SitaDulip Honestly even running around in Dragon Quest, the right trigger was starting to annoy me. It’s the biggest weak point of the controller, although I think it’s based on the dual shock design like everything else on it. It’s a shame because the D-pad is great and it’s got Hall effect sticks, removable battery. I’ll definitely still use it for some games and on PC.

@SitaDulip it’s a really huge game- so different from the kinda empty exploration of when it launched. It looks like you can also teleport to previous systems so I guess it feels less ephemeral. I really need to start practicing base building but I’m looking for the right spot. I’m wondering if I should start bumping up the difficulty.
