       @star i've also looked into them :3 they're supposed to be really low maintenance compared to a chain and quiet. but it'd mean either fixed ratio (unusable in a hilly city) or a hub (or crank side) transmission, which are unfortunately impossible to find with the kind of bike i'd like, so chain drive and lube it is for me :<

       @max it's a hub transmission, yes. but i think that that is totally fine. it "only" has 8 gears, but that is enough for me. Plus, the way i get this bike (through my employer) includes things like free check-ups and part replacements, so even if it were to not be as reliable as the other transes (heh), it'd still be more than fine :) but yes, i really wanted a belt drive for those reasons ^-^

       @star i'd expect it to be more reliable than a derailer too! problem for me is they don't make road bikes with hub transmissions ^^' and i don't even know if i could make it work if i was willing to rethread the back wheel onto a hub transmission. you probably need to prevent the axle from spinning in the frame? and you most likely need a different shifter than for a derailer, which may not exist in the road bike shifter+break lever combo style

       @max @star I've seen a few gravel bikes that combine belt-drive, a Rohloff hub, and road bike shifters, e.g., https://www.1bike4life.com/rennstahl/bikes/853-rohloff-gravel, so it's certainly possible. Though very expensive, of course …
