I got something stuck in my brain for some time:Let's say we want to travel to another star that is 4 light years from Earth and we keep accelerating with 1.5G to half way, turn around and decelerate the rest of the wayIf we keep accelerating and getting closer to the speed of light our time slows relative to EarthSo from Earth it seems like 4 light years but on board it won't be experienced for the same durationThe distant stays the same but the time passes drastic differentRight?🤔

Footnotes:- forget the energy / fuel required- max speed ALWAYS stays under speed of light

@stux correct. What you're bumping up against is the general theory of relativity. Special theory of relativity deals with the behavior of different inertial frames moving at different velocities relative to each other. But then general theory adds in what happens when you accelerate and shift from one of those frames to another frame. I can't pretend to understand all the math, but it is general relativity that both explains why it is the people in the rocket, if they turn all the way around and come back to Earth, who are younger than the people who stayed on Earth... And why we sitting down here in our gravity well experience time a tiny, tiny fraction more slowly than the GPS satellites orbiting the planet do. Because a rocket ship accelerating and the constant acceleration of standing around in a gravity field are exactly the same as far as the theory goes.

@stux According to Relativity, distance perpendicular to the direction of travel will shorten as you approach c.So time slows down, and distance gets shorter. If you look at a star a thousand light years away, the photon's point of view is not just that it took zero time to reach your eye, but your eye’s lens and the surface of the star were effectively in contact with each other.

@stux there is an excellent explanation for this here:https://youtu.be/8FT-oz9aZU4?si=6yB6OiRNRhmihasz

@mark I wonder to how far this goesIn theory we could reach distant stars with time dilation if we can extend our lives that way(again not talking about the requirements)

@stux Isn’t that exactly the acceleration Hail Mary uses? They did the math for you. There are entire reddit groups dedicated to accelerating at 1 g because that is what our biology expects. I’m posting an image to keep with in the 500 characters of my Masto client. Sorry no alt text it might exceed character limits too. It basically says witin the solar system the time dilation would not seem drastic yet- only interstellar distances.

@stux no, the distance shortens and the time goes faster because they’re the same thing (spacetime), but technically it depends on who’s observing

@stux i am genuinely curious on how you get such profound thoughts while literally running 5-6 instances ðŸ˜
