@lain @feld yeah, it is, if we're talking about most popular software packages. They suffer from bad design a lot more than from the lack of coders.Then again, maybe now it would be possible for a few motivated dudes to redesign software without spending years on it. Quicker design iteration is always good.

@feld @lain you didn't mention the name and I won't really bother googling what you mean.The link you posted clearly states that the claude compiler has its architecture "inspired" (read, copied) from LLVM, it wasn't invented from scratch. Which is fine, when you need a solution for an already well-explored problem.

@newt @lain and Chris Lattner's LLVM/Clang work was "inspired" (read, copied) heavily from GCC. He outright admitted he read their code and learned how to write a compiler from GCC, and he followed their implementations if he thought they were the best approach.

@feld @lain and your point being? Claude copied someone else's design poorly and failed to implement even the basic optimisations. I take it, there wasn't any pressure for producing fast code, just a correct one that passes a bunch of tests.Which brings us back to my original point. Producing code isn't a problem these days. Inventing good design is. Claude didn't invent anything here.On a related note, LLVM design is clearly superior to anything before it (at least, as far as open source compilers go). GCC doesn't have the main feature of LLVM, namely the stable IR as a part of API.
