       The thing that kills me about all this is that after years of building up kind/human/caring community around me, ppl I appreciated because of those traits suddenly drop all semblance of caring about them because.... they have the perception of coding a bit better/faster. That's all it took.I'll say it straight: you can't voluntarily and willingly use LLMs in a way that's aligned with respect for marginalized folks, with respect for the environment, with respect for labor issues and rights, with respect for art, and with respect for the community aspects of things like open source.It is simply impossible. Pretending you can is the deepest form of cognitive dissonance and I'm just beyond disturbed to see it happening all around me.I've already unfollowed so many folks I once respected, blocked some others, and just generally withdrawn from a community that used to be so personally fulfilling to be a part of. It's really sad.

       we really had a thing going for a while there. Glorious years with some amazing community and conferences that centered our human relationships to one another and how they could be better.And all it took to kill it all was a lying machine that sucks your metaphorical ego-dick and spits out worse code than someone who just graduated college.

       @zkat I suspect some folks interpret LLM-abstinence/boycott/protest as an extension of "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" , with loads of folks nodding in agreement, but far fewer actually modifying their behaviour in alignment the world is messy and complicated and it's far too easy for individual actions to have unintended negative consequences 🫂like carbon emissions, i think we need systemic solutions here rather than "individual responsibility", e.g. procurement rules that forbid spending tax payer money on LLM-generated codethe "individual responsibility" angle then sorts itself out as demand for artisanal skills and code is maintained 🤷

       @jokeyrhyme sure, but these folks aren't looking for systemic or personal anything. They're absolutely just wanting to play with their new favorite toy and ducking their head when anyone might give them the stink eye about it. They're literally ashamed of it.

       I'm not as radical as to outright unfollow or even block people who brag about their use of LLMs, but I do ridicule them sometimes. Their arguments to get me to please try inserting an LLM into your already perfectly fine workflow anyhow, somehow, but you gotta try it are also very funny non-problems I've never had in the first place. Writing code faster? Seriously? Like, do you really think my bottleneck is my typing speed? Easier refactors? In what universe is describing a refactor in vague English easier than selecting a menu item in an IDE?

       @zkat I’ve said for years that the advent of Trumpism had only one (very small) positive: it encouraged lots of seemingly-caring people to reveal what they actually thought about immigrants / gays / trans folk / etc so we wouldn’t have to work so hard to suss out their real personalities.  Apparently AI is providing a similar “service.”
