This morning nine.testrun.org was briefly unavailable, some network problem. A good time to remind everyone to add a second relay to your #deltachat app:1. Go to https://chatmail.at/relays randomly choose one of the listed relay pages and copy the invitation code to your clipboard 2. In delta chat settings go to advanced/relays and tap "add relay" and paste the invitation code3. That's it. @delta if I add it to my phone but I have a few devices I haven't updated that are linked to that account is it gonna put me in a state where I can't have everything in sync?

@delta I don’t understand how to do this. If I choose the second server from the top, open the page, I get several links to create a new mail account, but nothing that looks to me like I could paste it into that relay text field. Or am I missing something? I am blind and using a screen reader.

@delta So now I have to rely on not one, but two separate third-party entities when I only had to have to have an email address to use Delta Chat before?What kind of nonsense did you get into to go down that absolutely tortured path?

@hypolite You can use your own mailbox on a non-chatmail server if you want. If you are sure it works reliably all the time, you also don't need multiple mailboxes. You can also add chatmail mailboxes next to non-chatmail ones if you want to have things working when your server is down but chatmail relay you added works.

@gvitalik @delta there is a warning message saying "if you change anything, make sure all devices are running version 2.47 otherwise older devices will miss messages" but I don't know what version is on my other devices

@hypolite using two relays means that it works when either one of them works. When one fails, the other can still be used for chatting. It does not introduce a dependency but makes you more independent from any single server.

@marcozehe Are you doing this on the phone or on desktop?From Android, if you go to the second relay page (https://mehl.cloud/) and click on the QR code (with the "Einen kostenlosen Email-Account bekommen" alt text), this will open Delta Chat, possibly ask you to unlock the phone, and add a relay to the currently selected account.

@delta @gvitalik I just checked the version on my MNT Pocket, and it was installed thru flathub and is on 2.45 and didn't give me an option to update, so will have to look into why flathub or bazaar isn't seeing the latest version (I see on flathub that its at 2.49

@utopiarte @hypolite there is no older safe version that will continue to work forever, sorry. You would need to find a few folks who go for forking and developing things in a different direction, and then use their work.

@marcozehe the instructions were about adding a second relay. In the screen you posted you can just create a profile and then go to advanced settings.

@delta I am trying to add a second relay. But from the instructions you posted, it doesn't work for me. What am I missing? When I tap on that link you mentioned in your first reply, I only get to this screen I showed you, nothing else. So how on earth do I add this as a relay instead?

@kallekn it's also possible to add a relay after all others are dead. so there is no big benefit to add many relays a priori. the current limit is five.

@delta In the Android app it specifies 1 relay is used for sending, meaning I can still receive messages if I have added multiple relays and my "main" one is unreachable but I cannot send messages. Now you're saying that if I have multiple relays added I can send as well as receive despite the"main" relay being unreachable?

@_mosso You can switch the sending relay at any time. If you send a message and sending gets stuck because the sending relay is not reachable, you can select another relay for sending and keep sending messages. There is no automatic "failover" yet.

@_mosso If you add multiple relays to your profile and change between them, you will appear as the same contact, both in 1:1 and group chats. Internally since Delta Chat v2 all contacts in encrypted chats (the ones not marked with an envelope icon) are identified by their OpenPGP key, and it does not matter from which email address the message arrives, so when you switch to another address your contacts will likely not even notice unless they look in debug info.
