@mntmn People who aren't _doing_ always have opinions about people who _are_ doing should be doing it.In this case, I think it's a matter of perspective. I hope someone DOES continue to use those old Thinkpads they're talking about, rather than throw them away ... but that's not progress, that's mitigation.

@mntmn I have been following the project for a while and it's really cool how the hardware performance just keeps jumping! Like, it was a super-slow proof of concept first and now we can already run Blender and everything on it! It also fits with my idea of the perfect computer because my aim is to only have to buy one computer in my life (because I can't afford the MNT yet, I settled for "...two computers in my life" instead with a secondhand ThinkPad until I've saved up)

@mntmn as usual 😒Is the Rockchip open to begin with?BTW is there anything better than rockchip with appropriate mainline Linux support in the wild? I mean even out of the mnt reform scope.All my attempts to find it during last many years ended up with something like "Yeah, I don't like Rockchip but it's still the best option available".

@rayslava qualcomm has some good mainline support, but has normally fewer I/O ports and comes with a few more blobs and/or hypervisor (which can be disabled on a SoC like 6490 which we'll ship as the first MNT Quasar module)

@mntmn @cwebber the shortsightedness is blinding. Just because you can find repairable thinkpads today as lenovo still made them repairable 10 years ago doesn't mean you will be able to repair them for ever, or find them in 10 years.

@mntmn people will always shit on it because the processors offered are a lot less powerful than a standard laptop offering.Also the thickness is offputting for some.I bought the reform2 because it was completely open and "bkob" free. The rockchip modules are great but less free. I'll get a reform next eventually but I also have a "mainstream" linux laptop for everything thats not possible on reform for now. Different flavors for different things

@mntmn i think one argument worth considering is that buying old laptops is 'better' . In the same thread user utopiah offers a counter-argument very concise but very good : ' the idea isn't to "hijack" a locked-down supply chain and get cheap parts assembled anywhere. Rather it's to challenge that supply chain and open it up, which is indeed going to be expensive, maybe even environmentally wasteful at first but then long term will radically improve the situation'

@mntmn There are people who do not see what an idea could develop into. It's not important what the product is now compared to alternatives. But where it''s heading to. And MNT is constantly improving, gaining community attention. Remember, Linux and free OS was also an idea more than 3 decades ago.
