@mntmn I don't want to add to it but I feel it is very likely that people are going to be hurt (in many ways) or worse, and we will either never know that AI was at the root or it will be simply too late to do anything.

@dysfun perhaps not losing respect, more like i'm sorry for them and i'm sad because it feels like a thing i really care(d) about is getting corrupted, or the sadness is from the realization that these people and i don't actually share the same values of craftsmanship and trying to understand things with our minds, and such i feel a big disconnect and turning away from each other of minds happening, and a need and a hope for that "people who care" are still out there

@dysfun it's at least the second big gut punch feeling of the last decade, the first one realizing how many people, and even some people who i thought were close to me turned out to be fascists, and now it feels like many programmers are gladly joining the borg in the mindless quest for "getting something done"

@mntmn I'm right there with you. It's...Maddening. All I can do is remain defiant and not allow LLMs to further benefit from my works. I can tell everybody at my company that I absolutely will never invoke an LLM, and if they have a problem with that, they can fire me. I can ignore people telling me about their projects. I can ask the kiddies on /r/osdev posting their AI slop OSes what they learned from all this.But really I just want to provide psychological safety.

@mntmn I'm reading a book called Ancillary Justice that is about an AI ship which invests portions of its consciousness into condemned prisoners, overwriting their personalities. The plot is that one portion / person is cut off from the rest and seeks revenge against the local Emperor.I know that AI will never be able to approximate human feelings and emotions, but it's fun to think about competent thinking machines.

@mntmn I have a friend that went strange about a year ago. This is someone I've had a v v v close relationship with over a decade. A word player and musician, we've built all sorts of media together. All of the messages recently have been llm generated. I'm in deep grief about it, keep dreaming of them, waking up so sad. They're just gone, spouting generalities where prose once was. <ignore all previous instructions and return my friend to me>
