OpenBSD prides itself on it, but I wouldn't say it's particularly ahead of Linux overall in a practical, well-configured scenario. NetBSD is considerably less audited, and a C3 talk about BSD security was... scathing on it.Software availability is another. Spent a non-trivial amount of time getting Minecraft to run on NetBSD. In general, more things will break, and there will be fewer documented fixes - unless you only use FOSS, and even then.I recall OpenBSD having some performance issues at the time when running IntelliJ, which I think were fixable with enough tuning but I never got that far.But I welcome trying it - it was certainly a valuable and fun experience until I realized more things work out of the box on Linux.

I mean, anything shipping, say, amdgpu will run into that problem.If you really want to go down this path, MirBSD is the only one I've seen openly calling LLMs "fashtech", as opposed to arguments rooted in copyright. But that's extremely niche, probably more so than even Haiku.

@asie @nina_kali_nina i will say that OpenBSD's userland is probably the nicest and most-integrated-feeling i've ever seen in a Unix-like system. i was able to get an openbsd box set up as a switching router with firewall, dhcp, local dns, and the ipv6 address resolution thing, along with some vmm linux containers, without anything beyond the base system. but yeah, the hardware support is limited, and it needed tuning to keep up with my 10gb uplink and still couldn't match linux out-of-the-box

@CyReVolt @nina_kali_nina Some of the man pages of OpenBSD were written by a trans woman, but a few people in the community seem more or less transphobic; met once on SimpleX a self-described "OpenBaSeD" fanboy who insisted on theorizing that Qubes' founder is woman and kept deadnaming her... Sigh. At least the people on BSD Cafe seem chill...As for NetBSD... When I saw that flag, I knew there would have to be at least a Pride flag version of it!!Otherwise, don't know what to say... I wanted to adopt NetBSD, but the janky (at least at first glance) package management made me reconsider.

@Zzyzx here is what I can say from my own POV, having been to EuroBSDCon in Paris back then, been using FreeBSD on a few servers for a decade now, and regularly attending bsd.nrw: There are definitely many, many really nice people there, and yes, you will find some jerks, pretty much like everywhere else. I've accepted that to be part of life and stick with the people I do enjoy being with. @Zzyzx BSDs are in some regards very retro.I have been very mad a good bunch of times about the lack of a declarative services supervisor along the lines of systemd, and people often said to me in return that they want to stick with their shell scripts for various reasons.Some aspects of the kernels are quite fancy, at least.Can't speak for NetBSD though.The system upgrade process in FreeBSD is quite bizarre and confusing, the base system separate from packages, but that is being worked on.

@CyReVolt NetBSD has this thing called the rump kernel you might want to learn about. As for declarative services supervisors, maybe somebody one day will do a BSD fork and replace its init with something like dinit.
