Another reason to hate #Apple We're seeing more 2018+ MacBook Pro/Air donations — but Apple's T2 chip means even after iCloud sign-out and reset, the firmware stays locked to the original account.Without donor contact, these machines are useless. :(I've upcycled ~1,000 older Macs, but T2 era machines will end that. It's controlling, creates e-waste, and will only get worse. #righttorepair matters — Apple couldn't care less.

@Baa @codemonkeymike Disagree. Theft of such potentially important devices can be very costly for the owner. Not the hardware itself but the contents on the device.

@jramskov@helvede.net @codemonkeymike@fosstodon.org this all sounds good in the moment but in 10 years when we're staring down a mountain of e-waste that's all perfectly good hardware it all starts to feel pointless.I frequently see second-hand business laptops in lots all with locked BIOS passwords.Perfectly good devices, likely permanently fried because some company went bust.

@Baa @codemonkeymike @jramskov I believe this is part of the reason why our national security agency doesn't actually seem to recommend the "anti-theft" stuff, instead they seem to specifically recommend the "remote wipe" features.Unfortunately, most services make it impossible to have the ability to remotely wipe your device, without also making it impossible to reuse.

@quad@akko.quad.moe @codemonkeymike@fosstodon.org @jramskov@helvede.net if your device is lost, you should assume it and all its data compromised, wipe if you can, but cut losses, rotate credentials, and take data breach precautions.Reducing theft incentives is a seperate interesting argument, not one I'm convinced is worth the e-waste, or couldn't be solved through other, less *hardware-astetified* methods.

@Baa @codemonkeymike @jramskov nah, i don't think a little drop in incentive is worth it for the e-waste.Obviously people steal them anyways as you see people trying to flip locked laptops all the time. If anything it only prevents them from being resold, most people seem to only find out it's useless after it's already stolen.Unlike what one might believe, most theft isn't coordinated by some repeat offenders, it tends to just be someone who decides to yoink an unprotected laptop off a table and bring it home without much planning.

@aglimme @Gargron do you even know how big of an issue stolen macs are? I bet you don't!Also, i'm not saying lets just unlock them all. But it should be EASIER for the legit user to release it.. remotely from their icloud account.You can have both security and reusability

@Epic_Null @Gargron @aglimme exactly. Like how hard would it be to, at that screen, have a button that says "contact user" or "request to unlock"And then the user gets a secure message asking them if they lost this mac or if they want to unlock it for the new owner?Seems doable!

@codemonkeymike @Epic_Null @Gargron I totally agree that there should be a mechanism to totally unlock the machine, this however, sounds like a great way to harass someone. Steal their laptop or phone, then constantly ask to unlock. Seeing that pop-up over and over would be so annoying. Also laptop theft from cafes where I live is definitely a significant issue. Just want to point out that there are legitimate reason to brick hardware.

@Gargron @codemonkeymike @aglimme the one reason to password lock the bootloader would be to DETER theft if people know it will be useless to them to steal it. But there should definitely be an option given to the device owner to disable this.
