       interesting effigy dated 1376.. the man holds his great helm to the side of his hip and appears to be sporting some seriously shredded ab definition. there is no record of knights wearing the muscle cuirasses of classical antiquity, but surely this guy is not exposing his bare midriff with nothing but a cloak on?? what do you guys think? 🤔

       @vitalis it would be strange indeed to have armor on his arms (look on the right side of the image) but not his torso. i'm guessing this was a feature of the armor and that it was the exotic gamerslop hardware of his time

       @vitalisIt could be one of those, "I've been assigned to create a depiction of something I've only ever read about" situations. Another possibility is that some dude just had a piece of armor passed down many, many generations. Possible in that case worn by someone who doesn't do much actual fighting anymore.

       to be fair the horns are totally contemporary to the period. but those abs on display seem like an anachronistic detail for sure

       14th century great helms are meant to be oversized to go over a “secret helm” or a simple bascinet with chainmail around the neck. the idea was that you could wear them both while on horse and then have the option to take it off if you wanted more vision while fighting on foot
