Age restriction is not a solution for young kids addicted to social mediaThe solution is to put a wrecking ball to the exploiting algorithms that try to keep these kids on the platforms for as long as possible to show them as many ads as possibleAge verification is just another tool to keep taps on everyoneStart with the root of the problem and knock on doors from Meta to start with

Many adults are also addicted to social media, this would also help in solving thatJust because you turn a certain age it’s suddenly okay to be glued to the screen all day and spoon fed content decided by the companiesLets be real, the problem is not age per se, its the social media companies these days

@stux How about locking the doors to Meta's offices or razing them to the ground instead? Rotten company.

I would even argue that’s it’s more harmful to keep kids off of social mediaIf they gain no experience whatsoever and dive in on their 18th birthday in the current state.. wellInstead of banning it, how about teaching about it

@stux Imho the problem is the everywhere online promoted mindset only attention counts and not facts or how you are or what you do irl.

@stux the way I've seen this done now, is If it's not safe for a 5 year old ban it until a person is 18+Which seems a poor choice indeed

@stux I think it high suspicious that all these countries suddenly show an interest in chat control and age verification everywhere and all at once when clearly different countries have entirely different tolerances. And I would have more grounds than most people to be. The "Lions, Tigers and Bears" has always been "Criminals, Terrorists and Pedos". Legitimate concerns wrapping something more sinister omitting an even worse threat: Fascists, who ironically are usually all of the above. /1

@stux Second that. And since we are having a hard time to effectively fight the algorithm data mining companies, I'd like to see state and local authorities to set up their own masto/ppertube etc and also in the idea of public service make and fund content for the fediverse. I'd like to move my kids from YT to the fediverse, but there's almost nothing there that could remotely interest them. And me alone, I can't find or aggregate what little there is.

@stux tangentially related, even as a non drinker, I’ve often thought the US drinking age was too high. In Europe, it’s much lower (afaik) which means kids can get it out of their system while they’re at home with family, instead of doing more stupid things the first time they get freedom.(Also agree the companies should be regulated to remove the manipulative behavior)

@stux The root of the problem are not the companies. The root of the problem is as you alluded to the system - who owns the platforms and the means of social interaction (hint hint). The solution is therefore re-writing corporate law. Socialize social media.

@stux While I agree, experience shows that this is very hard to do. Look at online gambling. An outright ban is unlikely to survive a legal challenge and regulating specific practices becomes a costly and protracted game of cat and mouse.

@GOKUSHRM I understand but there is another aspect to this;If you never introduce kids to tech, they will never know if thats where they passion lies 😉 I wish my parents introduced me to tech sooner since i would be much further then where i amAaron Swartz is a good example

@stux yes, the whole discourse seems to be slipping into "verify and ban" as the excuse not to hold big tech accountable but also to allow lazy parents to feel good about their lazyness.

@stux I agree, all they do is tinker round the sides to try and make it look as if they are doing something meaningful. To anyone who fails to look deeper and disect what they do critically it looks as if they are doing something.I think it is also time to stop being nice, how about you say to the UK execs, 1. Massive Fine2. Block ( so people in the UK can't access)3. Prosecution of execs, including arrest and prisonGovernment need to 'grow some' and start acting. Once UK employees of Meta, TikTok start finding them selves facting prison, fines and even being made unemployable (due to criminal records) they will act.

@stux I remember the years when social media was actually fun. It was a way to make friends and find old friends. Now, socmed is just full of propaganda and fake news.Twitter, now X, used to be the place for personal bloggers where we post quick updated not worthy of a long blog entry

@stux Not to mention everyone intentionally picked the most stupid invasive approach. Instead of demanding from manufacturers to offer simple to use parental controls for parents to moderate and control a device their child is using, they demand governments to become their nannies. All at expense of EVERYONE's privacy. And children won't be any safer because of it. There will just be more private data breaches as a result.

@stux If the @EUCommission would have made their promise real and would have funded fedi software for kids, there would not be such a discussion. There is a chance to watch this video https://conf.tube/w/qdQijLPJSKH4zAVqn61iEoPSconf.tube will stop to exist by end of may, will move all videos then but links will break …Do not only restrict, "Giving Open Source A Chance" is a valid option too.

@stux Companies that provide social media services have been trying to find ways to identify the people that use those services since they began, so they can market directly to individuals & make $$$Now we have Governments mandating that SM companies know the age of the user, which really means they want your identity & the Government is going to enforce itThe circle of SM providers & the circle of lobbyists for age/ID in the OS is a single circle

@stux The only thing they understand is money.. their profits are where you hit them and you hit them so hard it makes it impossible for them to continue exploiting people. You classify them as publishers, and make them liable for all content posted on their platforms. You fine them for all content that is harmful, deceptive or deliberately dishonest... and you fine them for every like and share, every view... so a view of harmful content... say £10 per view, £100 per like and £1000 per share.... FOR EVERY SINGLE POST that they allow on their platform.Because it is THEIR platform and they choose what you see, it's their algorithms that put content and ads in front of you... The CHOOSE to put harmful content in front of you.The second it becomes unprofitable to do so... they'll change their algorithms... if they refuse or fail to do so... blocked at a country level. They either take responsibility for their actions or lose access to entire markets. It's the 'nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure' method... because it's the only one that will actually work.Punishing kids is not the answer, age verification is not the answer... all of that is just victim blaming for fascist leaning surveillance loving govts.

@stux Media literacy (or more broadly literacy in general communication), plus philosophy and psychology with how they relate to reasoning and understanding are probably the most important things to learn in the world.Like humans are all about communication and sharing information but for some reason when it comes to effectively sharing information, understanding and interpreting it and so on we're pretty much expected to just figure out everything on our own.

@stux Agree, social media as a social link is not inherently harmful. Social media full of ads and promoted content with short video clips that encourage engagement is a completely different beast, with algorithms behind every post.
