An age verification app's back end is arguably just as important as the front end. No word on that yet.And it goes without saying that nothing apart from the boolean "is user older than x" should be shared with a platform.Curious to see how this plays out. @EUCommission look I'm glad you guys considered privacy, that the app is opensource, etc, but to me it seems both unnecessary and dangerous, it's a whole new system that can fail and leak in its own ways, and this puts the burden of identifying on EVERYONE instead of the controls with parents that should be keeping an eye on their kids.I don't have kids, and now every website is going to ask me personal details. No thanks. I guess I'll just selfhost everything then, just like the kids would?

However, age-gating the Internet is a terrible idea that risks accelerating surveillance and removing the human right to privacy in digital spaces.A better solution: fund education of parents on digital risks and tools, education of children on digital literacy, and promotion of on-device parental controls. My driving license.I'd often get challenged. Which meant I had to show my ID with my home address to a total stranger. Apart from the obvious that this is about tracking, censorship, control and dissolving privacy and not about children's safety in any way - what is the idea behind this? I mean, I'll have the same conversations with my children about any content, digital or otherwise. They'll need to exercise judgment and I'll need to stay involved. Trying to "automate" parenting has never and will never work.

Saying that this makes it insecure is like saying OpenSSH is insecure because it doesn't encrypt the contents of ~/.ssh and lets you enter an empty password for private keys.By the way, the "cybernews" site you linked me to has a built in "strong password generator" in the middle of the article. Absolutely, but there are better ways than that, unfortunately, the all cost time and money. Just shooting an app at the problem is easy and low-cost. ID for proprietary socmed won't happen either; it'll stop at anonymous age verification if it even gets that far.If you want real anonymity you need to use Tor anyway. If they wanna know who made a social media post they'll force the company to reveal the IP address from their server logs, then go to the ISP and force it to reveal who the IP was allocated to at the time the post was made. It's how they catch people who upload CSAM on socmed for example.The government isn't affected at all by a change such as requiring ID to set up a socmed account, given that Tor / open proxies / etc. are all blocked by mainstream socmed anyway, and IPs as well as IP to customer allocation time windows are all logged. The only thing that changes is online privacy between citizens and private companies. Many people don't seem to understand that most privacy related laws don't affect law enforcement / the government at all, and only tackle issues related to private companies tracking customers.

If you act like a kid or write like a kid, you just get banned. If a kid first wants to fit in, they need to first learn to act like adults. No reason to introduce dumb age verification when the Internet regulated adult content relatively well, arguably better than today, in the past and it worked well enough that those that grew up in that era weren't affected by it on as large of a scale as kids are today thanks to Groomcord, Roblox and others.
