       I find it interesting how the meaning of "to detain" has changed because of law enforcement.See, the original meaning of "detain" was to temporarily be held back, to be stopped from going about your day for a moment.I might go down the street and get detained by someone asking me for the time. I don't really like having to detain store employees to ask for where products are, but sometimes I have to. Trains sometimes get detained for passengers to be able to connect.So the police "detaining" people was originally a massive euphemism. It rings like "we're just keeping them for just a minute, and then they can go about their day". But this has become SO COMMON that the meaning of the word "detain" itself has changed.Now if I hear "I've been detained by my teacher" I imagine you got in serious trouble and went to detention, instead of your teacher just delaying you from your next class to clarify a few things with you.
