@alice When I was a kid (must've been like 3rd or 4th grade, don't remember exactly) I was stimming in class by bouncing a pencil between the underside of my desk and my leg, poking holes in my jeans. Something startled me, my leg jerked and I stabbed myself pretty hard. Got thrown out of class for being disruptive, all that jazz.Anyway, to this day (20+ years later) there's a spot on my leg where you can still see the little bit of graphite under my skin. #TellAlice

@ataylor @alice i did the same thing! still have the little grey dot. it was on my right knee, but it's moved up my thigh a bit as i've grown. wow. 'nothing new under the sun' and all that...

@saltywizard @ataylor @alice I have a pencil tattoo on my right wrist from reaching into a desk drawer in my teens and being stabbed by a pencil that was protruding point-first.Must have been 20 years ago and it's still there.

@alice After a GreenCross tour to Japan to see the Fukushima cleanup efforts, the local GreenCross chapter gave us mugs that were supposed to ionize water for health benefits or something. Didn't think much of it. Once home, it turned out it actually did ionize water, because the bottom was radioactive. :D COVRA (Dutch nuclear waste management organization) said it wasn't bad enought for them to come pick up, but they strongly advised against using the mugs.#TellAlice

@alice We moved into a house that was built in the 1920s, very close to the border between Germany and Belgium. Digging in the garden, and found a large, hard, metallic object close to the surface.We figured that there may well have been lots of WWII fighting in the area, so this could be an old shell. (Germany has lots of unexploded ordnance.)Called the police, who sent a bomb squad guy. The thing turned out to be an old oil barrel - but he said “better safe than sorry“.#TellAlice

@slothropThats common in germany. After WW2 they just build up everything as fast as they could without checking the ground. Later, in the 60s, it became part of the regulations that you have to scan the ground with metal detectors before making any construction works. Evacuating parts of cities for defusing old bombs became common. Now with climate change the rivers water levels get lower, so from time to time old bombs show out of the water next to bridges that they missed.80 years after the war german soil is still full of bombs. Same applies to england and france...@alice

@alice I read encyclopaedia as a kid for interest (_tell me you are on the spectrum without telling me you are on the spectrum_) and got the nickname "prof" at about age 8.Fast forward 10 years and at uni I was unbeatable at pub trivia competitions, and everyone wanted to be on a team with me, because the prize was a drink card for the next week's competition (that ticks the trivia box).The combination of too much drinking and lack of study led to me dropping out of uni, but those facts are still stuck in my head and I still kick ass at trivia.#TellAlice

I forget who made it, but it was a natural sciences focused one, brown binding, B&W photos, smaller volumes only about 6" tall* The kids encyclopedia with lots of pretty drawings* The British science encyclopedia* The computer/technology focused one

@alice since i was a child, there's weird lore about me in my social circles. when i joined my first and current job, it took just a few weeks (iirc) for me yo be a clone (#4 or 5, i think) of my original self. I started as an intern, and as such I didn't do the harder interview. Even now my coworkers joke about the interview process being a "knife duel to the death" (a reference to YuYuHakusho's latin-american dub) and me being killed in the process and still getting the position. #tellalice

@foone @alice oh no, the grim reaper was a guest he didn't mess with the other guests. At least two attendees have died since mine as well but I am not aware of any new gender changes (the only trans guest I can remember was already out by that time)
