I couldn't find this info anywhere before buying the Terramaster D9-320, so I'm dumping it here.This is the board found inside the Terramaster D9-320. It seems to use three realtek chips labeled RT55432, never seen that model before, but probably a 5-port USB hub (1 upstream, 4 downstream). A more familiar name might pop up if I plug it into a system and run lsusb, but I haven't done that yet. After that there's nine RTL9201 chips (USB-to-SATA), one for each drive. These are then wired into three connectors (Labeled SAS on the board, but they only carry SATA).Two of the USB chips are only connected to SATA chips and then are connected to the final USB chip upstream. The main USB chip is what connects to the host, and interestingly a single drive is wired directly to it. One of the fat SAS connectors/cables is also dedicated to that drive.Does this mean one drive has higher performance than the other eight? I dunno, maybe, probably not enough to matter.Finally there's a daisy chain port, probably just because there was a leftover port on the main USB chip.The rest appears to all be related to power.

Another interesting tidbit is that it's not just the cables which are SAS, the connectors on the backplane are SAS connectors as well.It only does SATA (The ports are even labeled SATA on the board), but physically there seems to be nothing stopping you from plugging a SAS drive into it anyways.I dunno enough about SAS/SATA differences to say what would happen, maybe it would damage the hard drive or something. But regardless of the consequences, it doesn't contain any idiot-proofing preventing you from plugging a SAS drive into it its SATA ports.I see various SAS-related cables and SFF connectors used for SATA regularly, but this is the first time I see actual SAS drive connections used for SATA.All the eject buttons on the front of it are also wired to the backplane, not the main board. Didn't disassemble the whole thing so dunno what it does on the backplane back there. Presumably it just cuts power somehow.

And yes, the connector even has the additional pins on it needed for a SAS drive.Presumably they're just not connected anywhere though.They probably just source a shitload of SAS connectors at a low price, so they reuse them even if the product only does SATA.

@wolf480pl let's be honest, it's obviously a NAS case, after which they went "fuck it, lets make a version with whatever USB and SATA chips we have good bulk prices on so we can sell it cheaper"I did consider buying a "proper" SATA DAS, like the QNAP TL-D800S. But it costs twice as much. Unfortunately the used market here sucks so I can't just trade a half-eaten burger for a giant enterprise disk shelf like people in other countries apparently do.

@quad My (limited) understanding is the difference between SAS and SATA is mostly just protocol/signalling. I wouldn't be surprised if that exact backplane is also used on another product with SAS support.The backplane on my server (Silverstone CS380) supports both interchangeably, and for each bay the backplane has 2 ports labelled SATA and SAS, but only the SATA port needs to be connected, even for SAS usage, since that's the primary channel. The SAS port is the secondary channel for SAS 12G.

@antsu @quad the pinout seems compatible, though I'm not sure about the staggered spin-up pin (combined with "ready LED").In SATA it's optional and, from what I've heard, rarely wired up...

@wolf480pl @antsu I mean SAS hosts are backwards compatible with SATA drives, so yes, it should be very compatible.But a SATA host is not forwards compatible with a SAS drive.I don't know if SAS controllers use some magic ritual to detect a SAS drive or what. Meanwhile a SATA controller will just assume all drives are SATA.I've always assumed there's a reason why SATA systems make sure their connectors don't accept SAS drives. But it could just be a UX thing.

@wolf480pl here in norway the used market is so ass that if i search for "NetApp" there's only two hits.One of them is a DS2046 for 2000kr (~750 PLN) which is basically the same as yours, but pretty useless since it only accepts 2.5" drives. (Probably why it's so cheap). Which from my understanding isn't a DAS, but rather an FC/iSCSI SAN. Meaning it's probably a brick that won't even operate unless i pay exorbitant licensing costs to NetApp. Assuming they're even willing to quote me a price, I've heard that might not be possible if you didn't get your hardware directly from a licensed distributor.That's it. That's basically the entire NetApp selection in Norway, make your pick.I would check facebook marketplace, but I'm not touching facebook.

I've looked for NetApp stuff before, but usually it's pretty easy, since "NetApp" tends to return zero results.The 2000kr DS2246 is unironically an amazing deal compared to what I usually see. If only 2.5" HDDs which were available and high quality existed rather than just laptop hard drives.The FAS2020 is more along the lines of what I'm used to seeing. 4500kr for what amounts to a useless brick. I guess it can be used for spare parts if you already have a NetApp system.

@vala @wolf480pl to be fair, casettes are a gen z trend atm so prices are going wild.similarly i bought my gba sp ags-101 on finn for 400kr some years back. because nobody knew or cared what an ags-101 was back then, i had to ask the sellers to check the sticker on the back since nobody took pictures of it at the time.fast forward a few year and now everyone lists ags-101 in the title and i could probably flip my gba sp back on finn for 2000+ krsame thing is happening to cassettes and vinyl atm, hipsters are overpaying for stuff just because it's old

@vala @wolf480pl i've wanted to start a media collection for like 10 years. but i can't get anything in norway.getting CDs here is basically a platekompaniet monopoly, and their selection of weebshit is awful.at least blu-rays are finally possible to order here (still mostly only backordered via platekompaniet though), but weeb blu-rays are priced like collectors items, i want to support my favorite shows, but hell no if i'm paying 399kr for 6 episodes or w/e, at least give me the whole 12 episode season for that price.So my wish to buy my favorite music on CDs has mostly been cockblocked by Norway as always. Anime Blu-rays used to as well, but they're finally easier to get, and for once the pricing on them is a global problem and not a Norway problem.
