personally i’m a big fan of the protected mode of the 286RE: https://hails.org/@hailey/116396792450596963

@domi very funny question too because 286 protected mode and 386 protected mode are like. basically the same thing. their real modes are just straight up the same

@mothcompute considering this is reddit, i think they might have assumed that the 286 was the first one with a real mode. and 386 the first one with protected modethis whole online discussion thing is really hard, because if you posted this same thing verbatim i’d prepare to have a very interesting discussion about the merits of segments (i think segments are quite cool), but when /u/Revoluitionary_Ad6574 does it i think i should at most laugh. maybe.

@domi i sure wonder why theres such a large gap between bits 0 to 23 and 24 to 31 in the gdt entry structure... i sure wonder why the segment limit is only 16 bits large... its almost like... it was designed for a 16 bit processor... with a 24 bit address bus...

@mothcompute i like that three posts above mine there’s one saying that nobody liked segmented memory, in direct contradiction of my “it’s kinda neat”, a conclusion which I ended up on after toying with assembly for a few evenings

@domi okay minor correction the 386 adds 4 more limit bits. but theyre off in what the 286 calls the reserved portion. which was reserved... for forwards compatibility... with gee whiz i sure wonder which processor comes after the 286...

@domi honestly i feel like the utility of segmentation on the 8086 becomes immediately apparent once you stop posting on mastodon dot com and start writing 8086 asssembly

@domi (clearly never wrote a com loader voice) what is even the point of real address segmentation?
